Weird X problem

I have a problem with X, or rather two problems that may be related as they appeared at the same time. I don't know if these problems are due to the beta nature of cooker or misconfiguration on my part. I boot to the command line and start KDE (my preferred desktop environment) with startx. The first problem is that I can't exit X from within X. It seems like regardless how I try to exit X, text mode is not restored. In order to get back to text mode I have to use CTRL-ALT-F1 to return to the virtual desktop I started X from and then press CTRL-C.

The other problem is that X sometimes (about every other time) dies when I press any key on the keyboard. When that happens I press CTRL-ALT-F7 and then ALT-SysRq-K to kill off all remnants of X (still no text mode), CTRL-ALT-F1 and startx to get X back
