Guest dbmacg
For $200 Wal-Mart has been selling the Everex gPC TC2502 with Linux installed. Mandriva (2008/2008Flash/2008.1alpha2) runs beautifully on it. Since Wal-Mart does not sell them in Canada, I got it through Ebay. It comes with a VIA 2500g motherboard, 80G hard drive, 512mb RAM, and a Sony DVD/CDRW drive. It comes with gOS, apparently a stripped down Ubuntu. I don't know why they bothered to strip down the OS. The motherboard has 8 USB ports, a 1500mhz VIA CPU, and can handle 4 IDE and 2 SATA drives, with onboard LAN, audio, and Video. I installed Mandriva 2008 Power Pack, and it worked fine. Then I tried Mandriva Flash 2008, and got it running once i realized that the BIOS saw the USB pen drive as an 'alternate hard drive'. Once I correctly told BIOS what I wanted to boot from, it came right up. VIA sound works, VIA video works, but not Googleearth or compiz. Running glxgears got me a speed of 1000. It plays DVDs very well. It is quiet and uses little power. I installed Mandriva 2008.1 Alpha2, and am still running it. This is a dandy machine, and is much more powerful and flexible than I expected it to be. Mandriva makes it shine. aRTee
Welcome and thanks for the information. I read the everex machines come with this stripped Ubuntu? How does that work? Easy for grannies? Do you know what's wrong with video that G-earth and compiz don't work? Is it possible to add another video card to get good accelleration?
