Hello all... I installed Mandriva i586 many months ago, and until now the sound was working well, but now I get the following message:

Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I looked and the directory does not exist, and indeed I never installed any drivers for my sound card or anything.

I was looking around on a bunch of forums, and besides me getting more and more frustrated, no progress was made. I don't have alsamixer installed, and when I tried to do that, I couldn't because I didn't have gcc.

Here is the output of lsmod:

Had a similar problem with a game.

If your running KDE try this:

Open the KDE Control Center, go to Sound and Multimedia, go to Sound and set Auto-Suspend to a very short time, I set mine to 5 seconds.

Click on the Hardware tab and set Select the audio device to autodetect.

This works in KDE because KDE monopolizes the sound system.

Hope this helps

Ken
