OK i've this things:

1. iv'e restarted my computer and chose the kernel of 2.6.22.12

2. then i've uninstalled every nvidia package i found then reinstall it

3. after the installation ended without any errors i opened XFdrake

4. i rechose the nvidia driver for my card

5. when the system asked if i want to use more options i said yes and saw that the linux is installing some nvidia packages

6. after that if i do test i get this error:

drakx11: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :9.0

and in the window the error is a bit different but the same

if i choose quit then save when i restart the Xserver won't start until i change the /etc/X11xorf.config file

from driver=nvidia back to nv

but then the driver is the same and i still don't have any nvidia drivers :(

any suggestions ? please !

I doubt you needed to reinstall the nvidia packages since they are DKMS modules or Dynamic Kernel Support Modules. Ment to adapt to any Kernel with out manualy installing and compiling.

Though I have never encountered such an error with Nvidia and xorg so I have no idea where to go there. sorry :(

could it be that the kernel is the problem ?

i mean, i've installed the newest kernel but still it loads the 2.6.22.9 instead ?

maybe this is the problem ?

i can only start the 2.6.22.12 kernel if i choose it in the GRUB menu (now i've chosen it as the Default option)

i'm now going to buy a new USB Adapter for my IDE HDD and backup everything and reinstall the linux from scratch.

i will then try to create my own testing version of linux to try and abuse it :)

wish me luck i'm going for it,

i'll report back when i'll find out more

I'm running mandriva 2007.1 but I've some things that can be useful for you!

Dkms is a very useful thing that build a module for the kernel you want to use but it needs the kernel source for this kernel.

on your hard disk you have 2 kernel : 2.6.22.9 and 2.6.22.12

you need to have the source packages for this 2 kernels

You must know that kernel-desktop-latest-nnnnnnnnnnn.rpm is not a package (it's quite empty) but a kind of flag linked to the last kernel-version package to get automatic installation of the last packages

So if the newest kernel-desktop-latest-nnnnnnnnnnn.rpm is installed you can't install the previous....

But you can install which ever kernel-desktop (without latest in the name) package you want!

you need to have the source package for each kernel or at least the devel package (it's enough for dkms)

for you that means : kernel-desktop-2.6.22.12-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

kernel-desktop-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

and kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.22.12-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

or kernel-source-2.6.22.12-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

kernel-source-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

if you want to get automatic installation of the last kernel and source you need to install :

kernel-desktop-latest-2.6.22.12-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm (already done on your computer)

and kernel-desktop-devel-latest-2.6.22.12-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

or kernel-source-latest-2.6.22.12-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

Every time a new kernel comes on the repository it will be installed (the "latest" packages will appear with a new higher number and ask the install of the new kernel and source or devel packages.

You googled and did a wrong thing by linking the 2.6.22.9 source to the 2.6.22.12 kernel !!!!!!

Erase the link you created! and install the good source : it will be installed beside the 2.6.22.9 and not in its place! and correctly linked to the 2.6.22.12 kernel ...... so you will be able to choose which kernel you want at start!

When you start your computer GRUB lets you choose which kernel you'll use.

When loading all the components, dkms is called (if this service has been asked to start in MCC)

1) if the module is already built dkms does nothing but advertising that the module is already built

2) if it is not, then dkms buids and installs this module.

There are several dkms packages :

Dkms itself

and dkms-xxxxx-version

xxx can be nvidia for the nvidia graphic card

gspcav for some webcams

several version of dkms-nvidia exist!

I have the same graphic card as you : FX5500

The right dkms-nvidia for this card is : dkms-nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

don't use the dkms-nvidia-current-169.07-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm !!!!

this new dkms package is in the backport repository for both 2008.0 and 2007.1 and I tried it : it's the fist time I got a bad display since dkms exists ! I had to uninstall this new release of dkms-nvidia and to install the previous

I think you have to uninstall dkms-nvidia-current-169.07-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

and install dkms-nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm.

A little long But I hope it's clear

thanks for the reply

i read what you wrote but i have some problems:

you need to have the source packages for this 2 kernels

where are the so called packages ? and how do i link them to the dkms ?

dkms-nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0.i586.rpm

you said i need to choose the desktop.2.6.22.12 kernel in grub then install the dkms packages but only the 100.14.19 version of each

packeage that i need (like Dark said) or only the dkms-nvidia-current-100.14.19-1mdv2008.0 ?

thanks, and sorry for the low knowledge i'm new to linux in that filed (until now all i needed was programming but now i want to move from windows)

Were was it that you got the proper driver that supports 3d affects for the GeForce 5500 card though ? =(

I just spent another day of trial and error. Getting Error Logs all over the place.

The last error mess i got said this

"""

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most

frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or

improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs

from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as

rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from

obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s).

"""

I used the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.09-pkg1.run driver from the Nvidia Site. But i think i need the proprietary one.

I even got an error code when i tryed INIT 3 from the R console without X on.

Please Help !!!

Thanks for all the support.
