spinynorman
The Open Source Initiative has announced that the OSI Board has approved the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) and the Microsoft Reciprocal License (Ms-RL) as satisfying the criteria of the Open Source Definition, following their submission in August. The approval means that Microsoft can now rightly claim to offer open source software - at least when it’s using these licenses. More at 451 CAOS Theory. SoulSe
I met Sam Ramji last week - he heads up Microsoft's open source labs (http://www.microsoft.com/opensource). Did you know that Microsoft voted yes for ODF at the OSI and contributes to Zend and even Mozilla with Firefox for Vista, from their open source labs? I was surprised to learn it. The company, imho, has turned a new leaf, but is going to have to deal with the legacy of what it used to be.
dexter11
Actually Microsoft did opensource some things before without these licenses though nothing really important.
arctic
Right, but they are making it more public now, as the trend of the future seems to be open source while closed source seems to be the model of the last century. The market demanded that they open their business and they were forced to comply. That's imho a huge step forward. :) Now the interesting question is: What will they do/release with the new Open-Source license?
ianw1974
Probably try to IP it, and then sue Red Hat and Novell again like the current thing that's going on :o
