Mandriva 2008: No /dev/dsp. Is this correct?

I have downloaded Americas Army Operations game for Linux and installed it on my PC. Everything works fine but I do not hear any sound. I'm able to play mp3s using Amarok and I can hear the KDE startup and exit sounds. So, system sound is working fine. When I start Americas Army, I get the following error:

 

open /dev/[sound/]dsp: No such file or directory

 

I'm trying to debug this issue. After googling for a while, I got to this page: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Hardware#Sound_Cards.

 

In this page it is given that

 

To find out which program is currently using the sound card (which prevents other programs from using it, unless your card supports hardware mixing)

 

/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp

 

When I did this, I get

 

Cannot stat /dev/dsp: No such file or directory

 

This doesn't sound right. Any comments?

I think /dev/dsp is usually a link to /dev/snd/dsp or /dev/sound/dsp and it may be that which throws off fuser.

That or you may have to create said links - which would surprise me for Mandriva, never seen that...

 

You could also try to start aa like this:

soundwrapper aa

might help, not sure...

As far as I know AA is not linux supported anymore. I don't know how many which actually running the old version, which can be a problem if you want to play against others.
