2008 release date

aRTee, you said that if you install from cooker with a network/ftp install you get 2008.0, are there any other ways? Have been looking for something resembling an iso through cooker, and everything is still RC2. Also, what are the early seeders? Am feeling out of my league here... just impatient for the 2008.0 release. Have a couple of projects I'm hoping fixes in 2008 will make easier, and like everyone else feel I have a legitimate reason for jumping the que....lol.

Also, I'm in Australia. Can anyone recommend a mirror site that works at a high speed? Have adsl2, with around 7,000mbps and the aussie mirrors from easy urpmi suck. Often the packages downloaded from there aren't complete, and there isn't anything closer from the official repositories. Have been using the coffee mirrors from France, which seem very slow. Anyone have any suggestions? Aussie John mentioned the telstra bigpond mirrors in another post, at least for downloading release iso's, but haven't been able to find them to use...

Thanks people.

I guess if you install now from cooker with network/ftp install, you get 2008.0.

To elaborate on aRTee's point:

You do. (but obviously only right now, for a short period, until the two diverge again)

I did exactly that on Saturday, and after a few minor tweaks, 2008.0 looks excellent. The ftp install was smooth, and quick (3 hours over ADSL).

I used this mirror: ftp://ftp.sunet.se//pub/Linux/distributio...x/devel/cooker/

as you can see, that mirror was pretty quick, and I'm in Australia too

I've also found the usc.edu mirrors pretty quick from here.

edit: Just for clarity (with apologies to those who already know this):

Using cooker this way is unsupported, and runs the risk cooker won't match 2008 official at the time you do it.

The correct way to do an official ftp install, would be to wait until the mirrors have the official 2008.0 tree,

and use boot.iso from there.

If you do go the "unofficial" cooker route, you need to be sure to change your sources in rpmdrake (software manager) as soon as 2008.0 sources are available - or you'll keep updating to latest cooker.

Thanks matey, much appreciated. I'm impatient, amongst other things...lol. If I get a chance I'll install it over the next day or so, then switch my sources when 2008.0 official comes out. I'm really keen to see if Free actually will work on my machine, and what I have to do to configure it properly with additional drivers, etc. Have been using 2007.1 Live up until now. Thanks again. :jester:

I'm impatient as well, and have been anxiously waiting for this release since it was originally posted to be released (end of Sep). But I will wait for the official release to get it installed on my PC as ready (flawless) as possible.

I would suggest you wait for the official release of 2008, which could be out for downloading already tomorrow (Tuesday) or in the next couple of days. That way you avoid any cooker problems (unless you specifically want to dl the cooker version).

Lol! Was impatient, installed from cooker last night. 2008.0 is AWESOME. Really enjoying this. Just changing over my sources to 2008.0 from cooker now. Thanks for the tip off!

Public torrents for 2008 are becoming available

http://torrent.mandriva.com/public/

but, there is a bit of a problem,

Indeed, there's a problem with the Free torrents. We're fixing it now, it should be okay in a few minutes. The One torrent is okay. Sorry for the error.

Seems to be fixed now, the other torrents are back up alongside one.

Not actually sure I should have said this now, but it's out in the open at the club forums, where non club members can see it, so . . .

Adam can whip me if I have done a bad thing. I've transfered all the torrents I have downloaded via the early seeders over to the public torrents anyway.

Have a look around mate, I spotted images here earlier: http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ial/iso/2008.0/

Been there, done that. It's either our Firewall messing with me, or there is nothing there. I tried DL'ing it, but to no avail... I just got 3 or 4 KB and that's it!

And all the rest http sources were empty.
