some sites won't load in my firefox, but they do load in konqueror:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:1

www.gmail.com

any ideas as to why that may happen?

(firefox v2.0.0.6 withoug java installed yet... because http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=11283 is not working [both in FF and in Konq]. OS is 2007.1)

Hi Ofri,

The sites you mentioned - are they examples to sites FF can't load? Because I can load Gmail in my FF, for instance (running Mandrive 2007.1 with Gnome). So maybe the problem is not with the browser. When you try to load those pages, do you get any messages, or does the page remain empty?

Regarding installation of the jre, I would recommend installing it from the repos, but I haven't tried it myself.

And welcome to the board. :)

yes

no message. just timeout of the request

thanks. i read that post and i'm installing it now. i hope that will help me solve the java problem,

but, i am afraid my original problem (some sites not loading in FF) is worse. i also noticed in the installation of the urpmi media, that when i selecet a mirror that is ftp and not http, the installation just waits (i didn't wait long enough to see if there's a timeout). i think these 2 problems are related. my guess is that i have some default firewall or security issue. i will go read about that more.

if anyone has any idea, i would love to hear.

Also, do it in firefox. In the url bar, type about:config and then filter for ipv6 and set the option to true to disable it.

You may not need to do it system-wide, but maybe just in the browser itself. If other browsers don't work then do it system-wide like arctic mentions.

first i made the change to about:config in firefox, and it worked a charm (thanks guys, now i can read my mail :D )

then i also added the 2 lines to /etc/modprobe.conf but when i try for example

urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.mandrake.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz

i get

adding medium "main"

and then nothing  ... so i guess ftp still doesn't work.

any other suggestions?
