DieTer-Xz
Hi I'm trying to enable 3d acceleration in Mandriva 2007.1, kernel 2.6.21-5 for the Nvidia Geforce 2 MX graphics card. I have these modules installed and active: [root@localhost michiel]# dkms status nvidia97xx, 1.0-9755.2plf2007.1, 2.6.21.5-1mdv, i586: installed nvidia96xx, 1.0-9631.6plf2007.1, 2.6.21.5-1mdv, i586: installed I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver (configured in the control centre). But still I can't enable 3d hardware acceleration. 3D hardware acceleration: no Keyboard layout: be Mouse type: ExplorerPS/2 Monitor: StudioWorks 7 00S Monitor HorizSync: 30-70 Monitor VertRefresh: 50-160 Graphics card: Geforce3 - Geforce4 Color depth: 16 million colors (24 bits) Resolution: 1024x768 Xorg driver: nvidia I can't select the right graphics card, because I have to use the kernel module nvidia71xx, but build of this module fails. Greg2
You need the legacy drivers. If you've set up your urpmi, in terminal do urpmi dkms-nvidia_legacy
DieTer-Xz
[root@localhost michiel]# urpmi dkms-nvidia_legacy To satisfy dependencies, the following package is going to be installed: dkms-nvidia71xx-1.0-7184.10plf2007.1.i586 nvidia71xx-1.0-7184.10plf2007.1.i586 Proceed with the installation of the 2 packages? adamw
The GeForce 2MX can actually use the 96xx driver - but none of the *other* GeForce 2's can. You have no idea how annoying this made it to try and name the different card groups; in the end, as you can see, I just gave up, called the 96xx group GeForce 3 - 4, put the 2MX cards in it, and hoped no-one would notice... so the driver is actually right. We don't need to worry about that. I am wondering a few things here. The following information will satisfy my hunger for information :) the contents of: /etc/X11/xorg.conf /var/log/Xorg.0.log the output of: glxinfo | grep direct glxgears (for glxgears, tell us what FPS it reports. if the command doesn't exist, install the mesa-demos package). filochard
I try it in English why 2 versions of dkms-nvidia installed? if nvidia97xxko.gz is installed and libglx.so is from nvidia96xx as it is written in your xorg.log that may not match! You should look inside /lib/modules/2.6.21-5mdv/kernel/drivers/video and see if the mod is nvidia97xx.ko.gz or nvidia96xx.ko.gz Maybe upgrading the dkms-nvidia package doesnt suppress the previous rpms! and then the xorg.conf is badly updated leaving the last path to libglx (96xx !!!!) but using the new nvidia.ko! (someone must take a look at the specfile of the srpm to verify if the updating process is well done) Better is perhaps to uninstall the 2 versions of dkms-nvidia and nvidia and instal again only the 97 version ! (You must first use MCC to configure the graphic card with the nv module before uninstall the rpms and then after having installed the good ones re-run MCC to use the dkms built proprietary kernelmodule)
adamw
Okay, I know what's happening here. Good news, actually: everything's working fine. Your glxgears results confirm that (1500 is just right for a 2MX with 3D acceleration enabled). The problem here is simply that there's a bug in the graphics card tool that makes it report "3D hardware acceleration: no" on NVIDIA cards when it's actually enabled. I saw a fix for this fly through the Cooker list the other day, and immediately thought of this thread! I can't find the mail again though, sorry. But I'm sure that's what's happening here. adamw
Important to note - filochard's suggestion is wrong. You should not remove the 96xx drivers. Your card needs the 96xx drivers: it cannot work with the 97xx drivers. Again, the tests I made you run show that everything is in fact working correctly, so you don't need to change anything. filochard
Sorry about what I wrongly suggested ! I was just surprised by the fact there were two versions of dkms-nvidia and nvidia ! and didn't know that 97 version was not OK for this card! I hope that Dieter didn't break everything! Better had not to write at all when I don't know the whole thing! Sorry again!
adamw
filochard: no problem, we all make mistakes =) I just wanted to make sure he didn't do anything unnecessary.
DieTer-Xz
Hi! I realized I needed the 96xx drivers, but I still removed the 71xx and de 97xx ones (using precious disk space). So my 3d-acceleration is actually on? That makes sense, because I can select 3d-effects now. But, I can't use them like I posted in one of my previous posts: when I enable 3d-effects and try to start X, I get this error, and I have to disable 3d-effects in order to be able to boot again. > Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has two symbols > ignoring extra symbols Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server.
