Ronald Haynes
Hi, I have recently upgraded from mandriva 2007.0 to 2007.1. All appears well while working at my workstation. However, when I came to work this morning X was using nearly 100% of cpu resources. I killed X and rebooted and then all was well again. I left work a couple of hours ago and logged on to my machine remotely and things felt sluggish, so I did a top and found that X was once again using nearly all resources (see output below). It only reports 19% memory usage however nearly all memory is consumed. Note: I am not using any 3D desktop services. UPDATE: It appears that I am not alone, it appears it could be a problem with xorg, kde, the ati driver, who knows... http://www.kde-forum.org/artikel/15881/KDE...il-locks-X.html Any ideas how to figure out what is happening? Ronald Haynes
Could we get some information on your hardware and also what desktop environment you are using (KDE, GNOME, etc.) Hi, sorry, KDE 3.5.x (stock with mandriva 2007.1), stock xorg (7.1 ?? again provided by mandriva 2007.1), with an ati radeon 9200 card. Never had this problem with same hardware and stock versions of software with 2007.0. Let me know if there is anything else that could help you. Thanks, R Haynes
ianw1974
Incidently, what login manager are you using. KDM? GDM? I had problems in Mandriva 2006 when I used Gnome and GDM. It would die anytime from 20 minutes or higher and take all memory usage. Machine became unusable. Sounds like maybe you are experiencing something similar. I always had to use KDM, regardless of KDE or Gnome. Using GDM never works, and seems Mandriva has a bug in theirs that doesn't exist on other distros. tyme
Are you using the ATI 3D Driver from the ATI site (the proprietary one) or are you using the free one that comes with the distribution? If you're unsure, just run lsmod in a terminal and give us the output. In fact, the output of lsmod may be helpful anyways :)

Guest HF Dave
[EDITED] Originally posted link did not work, sorry. I have fixed it. I think the problem is NOT related to the ATI card/driver. I would like to ask you kindly to read this thread: http://www.kde-forum.org/thread.php?threadid=15881 I have put some more info there. Regards, HF Dave Edited July 17, 2007 by HF Dave
Guest HF Dave
I have just straced the X server when it has been hanged under 100% load. I have posted it in the previously mentioned thread. http://www.kde-forum.org/thread.php?threadid=15881 Please, take a care someone from Mandriva. The bug is really crucial. I am experiencing few hangs a day and I am almost unable to work. It is always risk to leave the box for a while without touching the keyboard and/or mouse. adamw
No-one at Mandriva can do anything about the bug unless you file a report at http://qa.mandriva.com/ . Thanks :)
