Where's Hal gone?

I just added an extra hdd to my 2007 Spring installation, showing as hdc1. When I tried to write to it I got this error

'This action only available through Hal' (or something similar)

On start-up I noticed this

'Start Hal daemon [failed]'

What's happened to Hal? Why has he deserted me? Was it something I said?

What type of hard drive did you install, eg. pata, sata, scsi, etc? HAL usually only comes into play for removable storage devices. How did you partition and format the new drive? Also, run this in a console and post the output:

$ su

<enter root password>

# fdisk -l

That should list all the hard drive partitions that your system recognizes, whether mounted or not. Finally, post your /etc/fstab file. fstab controls the mounting of partitions.

hdd is pata on secondary master channel. fdisk -l is :-

fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

  Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1   *		   1		3736	30009388+  83  Linux

fstab is :-

/dev/hda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdc1 /files ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hdb /media/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
none /media/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0,nls=utf8,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

Also flash disk is now not recognised, could this be because hal is not starting?

When I click on hdc1 in devices the error is 'Feature only available with Hal'

When I try to acces /files through konqueror, no problems!

From the kmenu go to System>Configuration>Configure Your Computer and type in your root password when prompted. This will bring up the mandriva control center(mcc). In mcc go to System>Enable or disable system services. Look for the entry for "haldaemon". Make sure the "on boot" box is ticked. If the hal service is not currently running, hit the "Start" button to get it going now without rebooting. See if that helps.

You may want to update your media database.

I don't know if this has anthing to do with hal problems? I enabled these repositories

to get codecs etc for video and dvd creation. I do know that hal was running before I enabled all the

repositories here:- http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ .

Perhaps I should re-install and not enable those repositories?

thanks for tip on repositories, I'll look into it when I've sorted my hal problem.

I've removed thac repository and carried out update with no problems, now have green tick!

Hal daemon still fails on startup, flashdrive still not recognised, but now hdc1 shows in devices.

Anorien is a dead mirror since quite some time ago indeed, and mixing main Mandriva with MDE or SoS packages is tempting, but a bad choice, nevertheless... I've learned that in the past, the hard way.

If you want to use "the latest and greatest" then either switch to Cooker, or another distro - simple as that.

We seem to be getting off the track, as I said earlier, extra repos are for codecs etc, which I now have, so those repos are turned off.

Getting back to my hal problem, does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem of hal not starting on boot? How can I start it manually?

It won't start from MCC. rpmdrake says I have hal-0.5.9-0.rc2.2mdv2007.1.i586 installed.

Just stating the obvious. Have you tried uninstalling the hal package and then reinstalling from a fresh download ??.

Make sure it also fresh reinstalls libhal just in case that is part of your problem.

If you have been mixing stuff with cooker then it is no wonder you are having troubles. Some of us users do the same but we know to suspect problems doing it and usually go back to non cooker stuff to get back to normal.

Cheers. John.
