orts
Hi I've got some problems finding a dokument, but I'm sure that i can remember some specific word inside it. Is it possible to search for a specific word, when I'm using Linux? In windows I have TotalCommander which can do it, but it would be great if there was a solution for Linux as well, it doesn't matter if I have to use the shell for it. spinynorman
Have a look at grep. :)
SilverSurfer60
On my KDE star menu I have a search facility very similar to windows, but much better.
spinynorman
If grep is unnecessarily sophisticated, you can also use Konqueror filemanager: Tools - Find File...
orts
Thanks to both of you :D Konqueror could do the work. Now I just wonder where I've forgotten my head? I tried to use grep reight after my first post in this topic, but it haven't found anything yet. I've tried to search for a word in a other file, which I know where are, and grep haven't found that file either.

orts
Give us the command you're using, and we'll see why it doesn't work. I used: grep -in "the word" logged in as user, not root. And I was in the right directory. I've found it in a danish guide to bash, I'm using Konsole can that be the problem?
Mhn
I used: grep -in "the word" logged in as user, not root. And I was in the right directory. As far as I know it should be grep -in "the word" <file(s) to search in> (without < and > of course) In your example you could use a * which means all files in the directory. To limit you could also use *.txt or something. Edited April 3, 2007 by Mhn

Darkelve
What about Beagle/Kerry? I suppose there'd be Mandriva RPMs for that.
