# urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins

This command installs the packages (programs) alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins.

(When using su -c I think the command has to be in the users path.)

As far as I know, "su -c" or "su" alone is the same, except with "su -c" you end-up as yourself when the command is done.

However, "su" and "su -" are not the same:

$ su root

gives you root's privileges but you are still "yourself" with your environment variables.

$ su - root

gives you root's identity: you are root, with root's environment variables.

[root@localhost jesse]# urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins

To satisfy dependencies, the following 3 packages are going to be installed (0 MB):

alsa-plugins-1.0.9-1mdk.i586

alsaconf-1.0.9-4mdk.i586

cdialog-0.9b-5mdk.i586

Is this OK? (Y/n) y

You may want to update your urpmi database

[root@localhost jesse]#

It looks like 2/3 and 3/3 didn't work. If that had worked would I be able to play .mp3 files from Mandriva?

Run easyurpmi (top of the forum page) again (or it's probably the first time?).

The paths you have are for "current" version which now is 2007.0, not 2006.0

You can also edit the paths yourself, replacing "current" with "2006.0", refreshing your repos, and then it should work.

Like that? I don't see how to update the paths.

Try going to those urls, eg http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Man...9-4mdk.i586.rpm You can see from the 404 error message that the url is wrong, and a bit of tweaking reveals that it should be /media/main/release instead of /media/main/ Although as scarecrow said, using the "current" directory is a bad idea, you should refer to your version, like 2006.0 or 2007.0.

Did you use Easy-Urpmi as scarecrow suggested? The link is still at the top of this page.

The links urpmi tries to fetch the RPM's are still wrong- obviously you haven't changed them. One example:

http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Man...9-4mdk.i586.rpm

should be

http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Man...9-4mdk.i586.rpm

instead.

Leftclick the first one, and you will get a 404. Now leftclick the second one, and voila, here it is...

I see what you mean now but how do I change the URLs? I just enter "urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins" and those URLs appeared on the screen.

I see your example of the change of the URLs but how did you get from point A to point B? How would I know how to change another so that it works?

First open a root console, say

kdesu konsole

...and then copypaste each line of the following:

urpmi.addmedia main http://mandrake.mirrors.pair.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia contrib http://mandrake.mirrors.pair.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://ftp.cica.es/mirrors/Linux/plf/mandriva/free/2006.0/i586 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://ftp.cica.es/mirrors/Linux/plf/mandriva/non-free/2006.0/i586 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia --update updates http://mandrake.mirrors.pair.com/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/2006.0/main_updates/ with media_info/hdlist.cz

Copypasting in konsole is done with ctrl+c on your browser (or texteditor), and shift+ins in the console.

It will take some time for each line to finish working (it depends on your connection speed)

The above links are from US (official ones) and Spain (PLF) respecively, if you don't like them (slow or whatever) you can always change them using https://mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php

Just a quick sanity check but last time I looked (which is a long while ago now) Mandr* (download/free) didn't play MP3's by default.... (Its easy for old hands to forget this cos its one of those things you do pretty quickly after an install then forget you had to do).

jesthenewbie: Just want to check... do you actually have ANY sound?

You can try to play say the KDE startup sounds for themes which are

/usr/share/sounds/ (and ogg not MP3)

If this works then you still need to do the easyurpmi thing and then select a Mp3 decoder (like lame)

cd /usr/share/sounds and there are plenty of files there for .wav and .ogg None of those will play when accessed through Amorak.

Ok.. those should play natively.....

Like I said either way you need to follow the instructions for easy urpmi.... but you'll be glad you did after :D

If you worry about editing files just copy the file first.... and call it .backup or something....

Then reread your sig and don't worry....

Worst possible case one of us can go through the thing for you and make you a file to download but then if you need to add a source later you'll still have a learn...

I know it can be daunting when your new.... we were all there once and beleive it or not I even remember some of these excellent people helping you starting where you are now :D

I learned far more about linux by breaking it fixing it, reinstalling and stuff than I ever learned from books .... just make sure you don't have valuable data or a deadline and go ahead and break it ....

I used the Home icon on my desktop and found those .wav and .ogg files to try to play without amorak but I think that I may have broken someting already:
