Only the root user may make changes that can affect the system. Without a password, that user is accessed by anyone. This is how virus run rampant in windows, as anyone can do anything to the windows system, even a clever 9 year old in Nevada. With a password for root, this is dramatically reduced, to the extent that the 9 year old goes after systems that are wide open (like windows). If you want to really appreciate Linux, then I suggest that you at least give root a password. After all the 9 year old should not be able to do anything on your computer.
