urpmi update problems [solved]

Every time i try to use easy urpmi, I keep getting the following type of error:

urpmi.addmedia main ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ia/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz

added medium main

wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg]

retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"...

ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/..._info/hdlist.cz

...retrieving failed: curl: (28) connect() timed out!

retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed

no hdlist file found for medium "main"

examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz]

problem reading synthesis file of medium "main"

found 0 headers in cache

removing 0 obsolete headers in cache

wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg]

unable to update medium "main"

I have tried using different mirrors to no avail, and this has been happening for about 4 weeks now, whereas before I was able to use many of the mirrors. I recently had to reinstall mandriva 2007 because of a power failure corrupting my hdd, but now I am unable to get the software I need onto my system.

I have cleared the media with urpmi.removemedia -a

any help would be greatly appreciated, as Mandriva is definitely the system I love to run, but I really need to be able to get media onto there, such as PLF free and non-free.

Is this just a problem with the mirrors, and if so, how far off being fixed are they?

If anyone has a file of media generated by easy urpmi that still works, could that perhaps be posted also, to see if that will solve my problem.

the following is what easy urpmi generated for me;

urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...se/binary/i586/ with hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...se/binary/i586/ with hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia main ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ia/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia --update main_updates http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ia/main/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...contrib/release with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia --update contrib_updates ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...contrib/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz

Seemed to find the problem, using ftp was causing the problem. When I went to using http repositories instead, it worked flawlessly.

Not sure why this is, but might be useful for anyone else who has the same problem to give this a try.

I have been able to use ftp repositories in the past without any issues.

urpmi.addmedia contrib http://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/...contrib/release with media_info/hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia --update contrib_updates http://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/...contrib/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz

AFAIK, the ftp repos only work well if you use the compressed synthesis.hdlist.cz insted of the normal hdlist.cz.

I haven't experienced any major problems using ftp with the full hdlist.cz (and I'm on dial-up). The worst situation I've had is when a server is down. That's why I use Smart as my package manager now - I can set up mirrors for each repository so if one server is down, it will download from another.

An easy way to add mirrors is via smart-urpmi as you can just right-click & copy the ftp links across to paste them into Smart.
