tech291083
Hi, I am using Fedora Core 5 32+ bit as my OS. I want to have a good list of different types (image editing, security, text editors etc.) of free/open source softwares for Linux OS, that I can just download, install and use without much fuss. I searched and came across these 2 sites, but are there any more standard ones that I can just visit and make sure that the applications listed there are stable releases and reliable in every sense. Here are the 2 sites in question: 1.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ftware_packages 2.http://www.linux.org/apps/ I am learning Linux as of now and want to try a few open source/free apps. Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
neddie
Our wiki has an incomplete list which has links to other resources. All the major stuff should be available through the regular fedora channels.
Gowator
Our wiki has an incomplete list which has links to other resources. All the major stuff should be available through the regular fedora channels. As neddie says but remember the completeness of that list is down to US. That's the whole point of community wiki's... arctic
Check some wikis as already said. considering the "best" app, it comes down to personal preferences. With regard to security things, you already have a nice selection in Fedora. A configured iptables firewall after installation, SELinux (read more here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Security/Features ) and you can further harden the system e.g. by shutting down unnecessary services using the system-administration tools. Some common security tools are firestarter, guarddog, shorewall, snort, gpg and ppdd.
iphitus
As said above, the 'best' apps are subjective So given that, the most complete list I know of is, http://packages.debian.org Other than that, you're not going to find a list with everything, nor have a hope of building one that's even half the size of debian's. But if you want additions, IM: bitlbee, irssi, pebrot, browser: elinks, w3m, editor: vim, news: raggle, snownews, 'wm': screen (ok, not technically, but those who use it know what i mean :) ) And that's actually the system im running at the moment. elinks is a better browser than i thought! emmanuel_uk
I really like http://loll.sourceforge.net/linux/links/ Loads of Linux Links They have a link policy and will flag "cool or must see" The purpose of the Loads of Linux Links project is to collect, organise, classify and maintain important URLs about Linux and the Open Source movement for all levels of Linux users. The LoLL project now has 5000+ links which are updated regularly.
