fuzzylizard
Windows Media Player - fast, stable, compliant little code with no spyware or anything, just what any brain dead human would want! :D :D :D :D okay, couldn't resist. XMMS - but that is also all that I have ever tried. I am interested in seeing what suggestions come up.

hippocampe
for mp3s? XMMS all the way !!! it even has a plugin that lets it play mpeg movies. For video, I use Mplayer. It plays every video format you can think of and pretty stable for a pre-1.0 release.

Michel
I've used mplayer for a short while: very good player, but I'm going back to xine now and try that again...Xine can also play everything and supposedley has better dvd-menu's than mplayer if you want to play dvd's...Have to admit that mplayer has some better looking GUI's than xine, but that can be solved :). Have a look for yourself.... http://xinehq.de/
SoulSe
I use XMMS for music and Xine for movies. Xine is the single coolest player I have ever seen.
