problem occurring when booting Mandriva Free 2007

I didn't know where to post description of my problem, but it first emerged after installing and booting my Mandriva Free 2007, so I decided to post it here.

Well, it looks something went wrong in the installation process, althought the process itself ended without bigger problems. Then, when I did boot for the first time I saw it ending on

Setting hostname localhost : [ OK ]

Nothing was happening. I only saw glittering cursor. My first thought was something did go wrong in the installation process, but then it came in that Mandriva have started after another "hard" restart. And now I have about fifty-fifty chances of successful boot, maybe even less. Every time I'm pressing power on or restart button, I wonder whether it will start without a problem, or would it end on the "setting hostname localhost" stage.

Anyone have an idea what's going on?

I get this too, sometimes after a few reboots I am useally good to go. I have no idea what causes it. I happens with all kernel on Mandriva >2.6.16 but older kernels are not affected.

Maybe I can make a bug report and you can vote for it or vice versa ( I prefer the latter, saves me the trouble of writing one :P ). I haven't found other bug reports, though I know that other people testing 2007 during the cooker fase were experiencing the same.

http://qa.mandriva.com/

There is one thing which I thibk might cause it, do you have other linux installs? Sometimes after a few resets I get something like "mount superblock in the future blablabla...... "

It's pretty annoying, I agree.

What your hardware?

I remember I have the 2.6.17-mm kernel installed too and it always booted without hanging, than I upgraded the regular kernel and now the mm kernel hangs too sometimes

lol googling for : "Setting hostname localhost : [ OK ] hangs at boot" first hit is this board :lol2:

Trying NOT to post a "me too" message, I do want to say that I had the same problem. I thought it was my system/hardware ... but simply installing a new kernel (2.6.17.13-mm-desktop-3mdv in my case) has solved the problem.

You might want to try downloading/installing a new or different kernel.

Also, check that you DO NOT have a smp (multiple core) kernel if you don't have a multi-core processor. Others with more knowledge on this are welcome to jump in ... but it seems to me that when I was having the halt problem I had a SMP kernel. Funny part of this is that I don't recall ever installing such a beast.

Guest Trex78

Hello,

I have (Had ? ) the same problem : install OK, but boot freezes about 3 times out of 4, after the "Setting hostname" message.

Had a look at http://qa.mandriva.com/ as ffi suggested, and found 2 reports for this kind of problem.

As this seems related with USB devices support, I swapped my USB optical mouse for an old PS/2 non-optical.

And it works ! :D

Booted successfully about 20 times, only problem beeing that at first, it stopped after "Starting HAL service" message, and opened the CD tray

I finally inserted the install DVD inside, hit enter, and the startup completed. It probably had to load some module to manage the PS/2 mouse.

After that, all my boots are successful, even with the USB mouse connected to the PS/2 port through an adapter.

Well, if you have USB devices connected, this is worth a try. Hope this helps.

I suggest to browse in the logs (/var/log/messages for starters) to see whether these provide any clues where exactly this fails. The (new) parallel starting of services in 2007 makes it less than obvious what follows what. There is lots of detail in 'messages'...

I just had 2 hangup but the system log is completely blank for that time :o The log ends with last shutdown and starts again with first succesful reboot!

Here's my log. I was trying out Xfdrake when I get a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor, ctrl+alt+backspace isn't working so I am trying to remember this mnemonic about elephants, which I couldn't remember to shut down cleanly...anyway here's the log.

btw: I also checked the raw logs, there is nothing there....

I suggest to browse in the logs (/var/log/messages for starters) to see whether these provide any clues where exactly this fails. The (new) parallel starting of services in 2007 makes it less than obvious what follows what. There is lots of detail in 'messages'...

Hmm, /var/log/messages file is full of data, but no sign of "Setting hostname localhost" or similar. Still looking for a solution.

It's quite intriguing to me why I have such a problem with Mandriva Free 2007, while didn't have with Mandriva 2007 PP...

I have been going through your logs (and mine) as well as browsed through /etc/rc.sysinit (which contains the code to set the hostname). I had hoped to find a clue in the logs what happened after the setting of hostname that causes your system to hang. The call to set hostname is in line 471 of this file, but this file is 1424 lines long, so lots of other things happen (that possibly cause your system to freeze).

The sections immediately following hostname are ACPI, USB/Firewire and a whole block to mount the various file systems. If you are comfortable editing shell scripts, then you may want to place calls to "logger" after every thing -- this allows you to write a debug message into the log (messages). (urpmi logger if not installed). This process allows you to pintpoint the area a bit more accurate and doesn't hurt you if the boot is normal.

Today I had to reinstall my Mandriva Free 2007, but the problem didn't dissapear. Maybe someone has found something that could help to resolve this issue?

Do you have an intel motherboard? I believe there are several solutions, maybe use uuid, it could be that drives are given a random name and therefore it won't boot. Maybe someone a bit more experienced knows a little more....
