null Posted December 27, 2006 Report Share Posted December 27, 2006 there's this "drivecleaner" thing popping up on everyone's windows computers, and there are removal instructions all over the web... but I've also got it on my mandriva 2006 machine... I'm not used to programs getting installed on my linux box without my permission... I thought that did not happen with linux how do I get rid of it ? It seems to be mainly Windows related and since the Lavasoft forum expert lists a number of Programs that should have been installed on your computer for free, I would say you likely did not have any or all of them. (Naughty, naughty, naughty shame on you) When I used Windows up to a year ago, I had every one of them and kept them up to date daily (not weekly or monthly) and NEVER had a virus or adware or spyware take hold. It detected heaps of them but got them before they could do anything I don't know about linux though. When surfing the net I ocassionally have the Popup occur when I am using Firefox but I just close the popup. It seems that drive cleaner changes itself continually and sneaks past adblock until adblock records its format and blocks it from reappearing until the next morphed form. null Posted December 27, 2006 Author Report Share Posted December 27, 2006 I don't think the actual "program" is installed. It's a popup that comes up occasionally without warning. I'm not sure if it was only when I was browsing with firefox, or if I was just on my desktop... and not really doing anything... My firefox blocks almost every popup... don't know how this one gets thru... It's an annoying popup that warns you that you have tons of porno traces on your computer... and that you should buy drivecleaner to get rid of it... It's a scam since I've never looked at any adult stuff with my linux machine... really... I have a windows machine also, and occasionally the drivecleaner popup comes up even when I'm not browsing... such as maybe right after a boot up... I think my freebie adaware or freebie spybot S&D may have gotten rid of it though... haven't seen it lately... I don't know how to install anything on linux such as adblock or whatever. You can't just go to mozilla and click on install adblock... I guess that is just for windows versions. Besides that it tells me my firefox is not the right version... (I have 1.0.6). Regarding your version of Firefox, I would recommend that you check that you don't have 2 Firefox directories (such as /usr/lib/firefox & /usr/bin/firefox). You may have installed v1.5, but have your menu still pointing to the old 1.0.6 version. Also check via the Control Center to see if you have Firefox installed or not as it is available as an rpm. It is not difficult to install extensions in Firefox on Linux. I usually recommend that people download (by right clicking in Firefox & selecting & "Save link as") MR Tech Local Install first. Once you have saved it to a directory, open a file manager (such as Konqueror) & "drag" the file into your Firefox window. The extension install dialogue will then open. After installing Local Install restart Firefox. You can then open your extensions window (via the Tools menu) and install extensions directly from your hard drive as Local Install puts an install button in the extensions window. It worked good, and when I got into firefox after installing the new one, firefox told me something like "congratulations, you have the newest firefox!"... Also when I checked the Help/about mozilla firefox, it showed the newest version. Yes, I remember having 2 firefoxes on my computer.... not sure about the directories.. I'm at work now, will check at home later. Once you have saved it to a directory, open a file manager (such as Konqueror) & "drag" the file into your Firefox window. The extension install dialogue will then open. I didn't know that, thanks! I'm going to install the new mandriva anyway, maybe the newer firefox will be included... so I should just wait.
