Guest sheepdog
I have just installed Mandriva for a friend and all is well except that her ppp dial-up connection connects to the ISP but then does not resolve addresses. ifconfig shows that the connection is up and shows an IP at both ends, but when I try to ping the IP at the other end or ping www.yahoo.com the error "unreachable host" is returned. I have triple checked all the settings in KPPP. Any suggestions, please?
jaraeez
hey, sounds like DNS isn't resloving. Have you entered the correct DNS servers for your ISP? what does '/etc/resolv.conf' say? do you the firewall active? & what does 'ifconfig -a' show? Guest sheepdog
hey, sounds like DNS isn't resloving. Have you entered the correct DNS servers for your ISP? what does '/etc/resolv.conf' say? do you the firewall active? & what does 'ifconfig -a' show?Yes. The firewall was the problem. Apparantly Mandiva is installed with the firewall allowing nothing through. I had to allow a DNS server to connect to get ppp to resolve addresses. It would be nice if this was documented in an obvious way. Seems like others connecting with a modem and installing Mandriva for the first time would also experience the confusion I did. Still don't understand why the DNS server needs to connect.
