rogerh
Hello, Can someone please provide a list of actions I need to take to disable all auto updates on my Mandriva 2006?? I still am on modem, and part through a session some download starts which completely disables my session. The packet profile looks like a typical download, with most everything coming in - if it were going out, I would be a lot more worried. I only have the disks on my media manager, and those have the update boxes unclicked. Not sure what actions I need to take to disable the updates, but this is a real problem for me. Any recommendations appreciated Regards -- Roger
ianw1974
Check for an applet by the clock, this is what would auto-update in the background. Otherwise, it doesn't do anything automatically.
rogerh
Hi, Running KDE and on one side of the clock there is a 'hide panel' and on the other is the Korganizer alarm demon, screen resize, a questionmark in an orange circle that says that 'service is not configured', network up/down icon and the volume. Not sure where the update applet by the clock is?? What should I be looking for? Thanks and regards -- Roger
tyme
orange circle that says that 'service is not configured'This is the icon that would be doing the updates. If it states service not configured then it is not automatically getting updates. There is another culprit here... next time you experience load open a terminal/konsole and run: netstat and post the output, please.
rogerh
Yikes, this sounds like it might be something unpleasant...... now I would have been happy with updates : ) Can I just write down the result of netstat, or do I need to do a screenshot?? If so, can you provide info on how to do that in console (and where will it go such that I can retrieve it....). Yep, can barely turn on the system.... Thanks -- Roger PS - given recent behavior, it won't be long before I have an opportunity to run netstat
tyme
netstat is going to have a lot of output...not something easily written down. i'm not sure how to take a screenshot in console...
ianw1974
Yes, sorry I forget what the update app looks like, it's that orange questionmark.
rogerh
Ok, well it happened again (no surprise). I closed the browser and the 'download' was still happening. I opened console, logged into su, and typed in 'netstat'. No log came up, but just a message something like 'foreign user'. I tried 'run netstat' but no result. Can anyone clarify what I need to do differently to get a useful log, or what action I need to take. At this time, I am thinking I need to save personal files on dvd and reload 2006. I am concerned, though, that I will end up in the same situation in the near future. Any suggestions appreciated. I am concerned that I have a virus or some such infliction. rogerh
Hello, I did copy some of the information out of netstat - if someone can tell me how to do a screenshot in console then I can get the whole content here. Browsers and all windows were closed when I ran netstat. Some of the streams had no path data (which is why they are blank below....) this is the info with type=stream. No 'flags' were checked.... Inode Path 54522 /tmp/.ice-unix/dcop3851-1165503244 54521 54516 /tmp/.ice-unix/3878 54515 ?? /tmp/.x11-unix/xo 54520 27264 /tmp/ice-unix/dcop3851-1165503244 this repeats a bit, and then some others 14354 /home/roger/tmp/ksocket-roger/klauncherc81wa.slave-socket 10413 /tmp/mcop-roger/localhost-of21-45782b16 10354 @/tmp/fam-roger- 9631 /var/run/dbus/system-dbus_socket 9624 /home/roger/tmp/orbit-roger/linc-ef4-0-10fdf5678d0a1 8752 /tmp/.x11-unix/xo Hope this allows someone here to get some idea of what is going on with my system and what I can do to put an end to it. Please let me know if more info is required and what it would be. Thanks -- Roger
riseringseeker
Hello, I did copy some of the information out of netstat - if someone can tell me how to do a screenshot in console then I can get the whole content here. Thanks -- Roger No need for a screenshot, just try this: # netstat > /home/<your_user_name>/netstat_output Then it will just be a text file named netstat_output in your home directory. ianw1974
You can also filter out the streams, and just do: netstat -tuan which will give tcp/udp and remove the names on each service, giving us the ip and port numbers instead. And can use the pipe command as above to redirect to a file instead to then later post here.
rogerh
Hello, Here is the netstat -tuan. Hopefully it provides a clue as to what is going on. Browers were closed when I ran netstat - seems that the ebay autos page I was looking at prior to the auto download was still active?? tyme
Web page connections will sometimes stay active for a short bit after you close the window: When you close a socket, the server goes into a TIME_WAIT state, just to be really really sure that all the data has gone through.Looks like you were also visiting http://www.cpan.org/?That's what this one is: tcp 0 0 0-1pool117-202.nas68.:58740 128.121.60.235:http ESTABLISHED Doesn't appear to be anything suspicious that would be causing your connection to go slow... rogerh
Hi, I actually don't know anything about 'cpan.org'. I put in the address below the ebay one that says 'established' (128.121.60.235) and it seems to come up as 'ClamAV', which I gather is a linux antivirus program. When I tried to open it up, it indicated that the auto-update feature was off, but then the whole ClamAV program locked up. I have not put any of the updates on ClamAV, and I wonder if it is busted and updating itself. Can I just delete ClamAV, or does it play some useful function on my system? I guess my options are update or delete?? Thanks -- Roger
tyme
I would remove clamav and see if that resolves the issue. ClamAV can be useful if you are sharing a lot of files to Windows users and are concerned that you might pass on a virus, however, there are a grand total of 3 known viruses for Linux (IIRC) and none of them are really relevant anymore - so you won't be at risk removing it. (I don't even run a virus scanner in Linux :D)
