Mandriva Free 2007 hangs on reboot after HAL

Have just installed Free 2007 for the 1st time.

Everything seemed to go fine with the installation until I was asked to click on a button to reboot the PC.

The reboot process went fine until after "Starting HAL service". It shows "OK" next to "Starting HAL service". Then it just freezes.

I rebooted 2 more times selecting both FAILSAFE and linux-nonfb (don't know what fb means) Same result.

Actually FAILSAFE ended up going to the prompt "sh-3.1#"

I've installed and used SKOLELINUX (Debian) on 2 other PCs. Only a few problems there.

So what is happening here? I know very little about linux, but I'm the system administrator at 2 small schools using windows 2003 server with active directory.

I'd be extremely grateful for help on this. I'm trying to get more experience with linux so I can start to introduce it into the schools.

Mine used to freeze all the time right after it set my hostname. I discovered that if I remove the "resume=/dev/hdx" option from the boot options that it no longer hangs there. You mght want to try that if you have the GRUB boot loader installed. I reinstalled Mandriva at least 6 times before I discovered that.

Have installed Free 2007 2 times with the same result, even though I changed the graphic card and network card. Everything goes fine with the installation until I am asked to reboot the PC.

The reboot process goes fine until after "Starting HAL service". It shows "OK" next to "Starting HAL service". Then it just freezes at time 19:43:32.

I know very little about linux, but managed to use Knoppix to locate 2 log files. They are:

So what is happening here?

I'd be extremely grateful for help on this. I'm trying to get more experience with linux so I can start to introduce it into the schools.

The first time I posted this problem “Kephra” kindly contributed the following:

“Mine used to freeze all the time right after it set my hostname. I discovered that if I remove the "resume=/dev/hdx" option from the boot options that it no longer hangs there. You mght want to try that if you have the GRUB boot loader installed. I reinstalled Mandriva at least 6 times before I discovered that.”

Perhaps this advice will work, but I don't know how to do it. Could someone kindly explain how to or give a better suggestion? I'm really stuck.

When you reboot, and before the 10 second delay expires, press the E key which bings up the main booting data.

Press the E key again and you can edit the line by using the arrow keys to move the cursor to the end of what you want to delete then use the backspace key to delete what you want. If you make a mistake and unintentionally delete anything then just type it back in. When you complete what you intended, then just click on ESC and then on ESC a second time and this will bring you back to the boot menu.

Just click on Enter to proceed.

I hope this helps you and best wishes for your intentions for your school.

Cheers. John.

Admins and Mods. I think our poster had unintentionally created two threads on the same issue.

Suggest deleting this one.

I have made a reply (as well as other members) in the other thread before I spotted this one here.

Cheers. John.

Alistair:

I am a Mandriva 2005 user, so I do not have any personal experience to contribute toward solving your Mandriva 2007 installation problem.

However, I did a little research, looking through the Mandriva 2007 errata and release notes.

Mandriva Linux 2007.0 introduces a new parallel initialization system, replacing the classic sequential initialization system. This means that during boot, many services are started at the same time, improving boot speed. Dependencies in the initialization scripts are used to ensure the correct starting order for services that rely on other services being started first. This system should work without problems on most systems, but there are some potential issues. For more information on these, see the Errata.

Apparently, this new parallel initialization system can be disabled using nopinit as a kernel parameter.

General instructions: installation problems often require the use of kernel parameters. To specify kernel parameters during installation, simply boot the installer as usual. On the very first interactive screen, where you are presented with the options "Boot from Hard Disk", "Installation" and so on, highlight "Installation" and then just type the kernel parameter required. You will see it being added to the "Boot Options" text box near the bottom of the screen. When you have typed the required kernel parameters, simply hit Enter.

Maybe this helps?

AussieJohn, I couldn't get your e or E to work while the blue Mandriva boot window is counting down 10 seconds. The E simply stopped the countdown. I pressed a 2nd time without luck.

The blue Mandriva bootup screen has only 2 options: "Linux" or "Failsafe".

I have now booted from CD1 of the 4 installation CDs I burnt.

Now I have many boot options. When I pressed E it just inserted e into the "Boot options" line.

What next?

Note I used the capital E just to emphasise the letter. Sorry for it causing the misunderstanding.

Just use lower case e as normal. If you used a capital then of course it would not work.

A trick to stop the countdown is to select failsafe and then go back to the OS so you can take your time.

Cheers. John.

Followup.

What I outlined to you, I just did 10 minutes ago on my own computer to be sure I had written the process correctly and I had done.

here it is again:- boot menu, stop countdown by selecting failsafe then select back to your OS. Press e, this takes you to the boot instructions, press e again and this lets you edit the boot instructions, use arrow keys to move cursor to end of the data you wish to delete then use backspace key to delete those words or letters, if needs be type in any new instructions and when finished use ESC key, then ESC key again and you are ready to continue rebooting.

Cheers. John.

This probably only works for grub, I'm guessing you have LILO installed instead of grub which is why John's suggestion isn't working for you.

With LILO you can press ESC to get a command prompt, but can't really edit anything like John suggests - grub is far better in this respect.

Thanks Ian. I had forgotten that aspect. Another reason to make you wonder why lilo is still used since it seems to lack the usability and simplicity of Grub.

I think it is time Mandriva wised up and made Grub the default but leave an option to install lilo for the diehards.

Oh boy will I get flamed over this. :lol2::lol2::lol2: But I think someone needs to say it out loud. :D :D :D

Cheers. John.
