i have an advent 6419, and i've installed mandriva 2007 on it, everything says [OK] and then it just goes to a black screen, i picked the right graphics card, SiS 630, and even tried 800x600 with 16bpp and even vgalo, graphics card has 8mb shared memory. wanted to run mandriva on this since windows is shit, but seeing as X can't even run, i dont know anymore.

Which graphics card does your laptop have? If it is Nvidia, use the generic and see if it will then boot up. That is what I had to do with my Toshiba 5000 series, which I bought in 2002, because it uses the Geforce 440 Go which does not support 3d accleration with MDV 2007. It wouldn't boot at all until I used the generic "nv" without the 3d acceleration.

Let me know if my input solves your problem, or not.

Regards,

Richard L.

Make sure that the sis driver for modular X got installed. I had to urpmi the xorg-x11-drv-sis package on my Mandriva-laptop. Also check the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if the driver listed there is "sis".

The machine lists a native resolution of 1024X768. I have never had any success running my own laptop at any resolution other than the native resolution. Try vesa at 1024X768, just to get a gui. My own laptop has a newer SiS chip, but it does work in Linux, although it is detected differently.
