Guest Nanda Sunu
Hi, Thanks to the kind help on this forum I got vmware working, I now need to access my mandriva files from inside a windows 2000 vmware machine. I know this is possible by using samba, but am useless at setting it up. Any ideas? Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
jboy
Here's a wiki article on setting up Samba: http://devries.mandrivausers.org/pmwiki/pm....php/Main/Samba Another nice article: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/11/20/207251
Guest Nanda Sunu
Thanks for the articles, but I'm still having trouble. I can see my samba connection via windows now, but I can't see any of the shared folders I set up
jboy
One thing to check would be your firewall settings, to allow the ports that Samba uses. This excerpt is from: Samba.org documentation on using a firewall "If you are setting up a firewall, you need to know what TCP and UDP ports to allow and block. Samba uses the following: Port 135/TCP - used by smbd Port 137/UDP - used by nmbd Port 138/UDP - used by nmbd Port 139/TCP - used by smbd Port 445/TCP - used by smbd" Go into MCC, Security section, and check your firewall settings. Phil Edwards
If you're using VMWare workstation, you just need to switch on shared folders in your VMWare guest preferences. Your Win2k instance then see's your Linux filesystem under "\\.host", i.e. you can do Start --> Run --> \\.host and a new explorer window will open allowing access to your Linux data. scarecrow
Yeah, shared folders is the simplest solution for VMWare workstation (but AFAIK not available for the free VMWare player).
Phil Edwards
Yeah, shared folders is the simplest solution for VMWare workstation (but AFAIK not available for the free VMWare player). Don't bother wasting your bandwidth downloading VMWare player. I'd recommend grabbing a copy of VMWare server instead - it's also free and does a lot more. All 'IMHO', of course...
