Install KDE 3.5.5?

Hi guys,

Just wanted to know if anyone here has been able to successfully install kde 3.5.5 (from the cooker, I assume)?

I tried to install kde 3.5.5, but looks like i failed. Here's what I did:

1. tried adding cooker sources to SMART, using easy urpmi. But it was still not showing kdebase version 3.5.5 in the searches.

2. so i added the sources for urpmi instead.

urpmi.addmedia main http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/i586/media/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia contrib http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/i586/media/contrib/release with media_info/hdlist.cz

3. did this in the Terminal:

urpmi kdebase

and it gave me the following output:

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi kdebase

kdebase kdebase-kdm kdebase-progs

kdebase-common kdebase-kmenuedit kdebase-servicemenu

kdebase-kate kdebase-konsole

kdebase-kdeprintfax kdebase-nsplugins

[root@localhost ~]# urpmi kdebase

To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed:

kdebase-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-common-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-kate-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-kdeprintfax-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-kmenuedit-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-konsole-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-nsplugins-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

kdebase-progs-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

libkdebase4-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

libkdebase4-kate-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

libkdebase4-kmenuedit-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

libkdebase4-konsole-3.5.5-4mdv2007.1.i586

Proceed with the installation of the 12 packages? (55 MB) (Y/n) y

As you can see, I said "y"

So, then it installed WITHOUT any errors. so I thought it installed without any problems.

4. so I restarted my system, logged in, and waited for kde to load.

5. after 1 minute or so, the error comes up saying:

could not start kdeinit. Recheck your install

So, to make the long story short, I do not think I have installed kde 3.5.5 correctly. Good thing I selected additional desktop environment during the Mandriva install, otherwise I would have been completely lost

In conclusion, I would like to ask the community if anyone successfully installed this baby? and if so, how? if not, do you have any suggestions/tips/hints etc. for what I should do to get my KDE upgraded to 3.5.5?

Much apprecaited,

cooker is development, and packages there are often broken. I haven't personally tried using it (I don't use KDE anyways) so I can't be positive this is your problem, but it very well may be. Not to mention the fact that you're trying to run it on a system it wasn't intended to run on (it's meant for cooker installs, not stable installs). My suggestion would be to check out third-party repositories that package newer versions of programs for the stable version of Mandriva - places such as Seer of Souls and Mandriva Enhanced RPM's. But first you have to fix your current problem, and unfortunately I'm not an expert on that...

hello tyme,

Thanks for the reply :)

Can't I just downgrade it back to 3.5.4 and then use the SoS or MDE places to install from?

OR does my current situation HAS to be resolved before that?

(if it's the latter, please tell me what can happen if I do not resolve my current situation and downgrade and then reupgrade from 3rd parties)

thanks,

when the sentence appears "could not start kdeinit. Recheck your install", type

init 3

su (+passwd)

urpmi.addmedia SoS-KDE355 http://seerofsouls.com/mandriva/2007/i586/KDE355/ with hdlist.cz

rpm -e --nodeps `rpm -qa | grep -i kde | grep 3.5`

rpm -e --nodeps kdevelop

urpmi kdebase kdeutils kdeaddons kdeaccessibility kdegames kdegraphics kdeedu kdebase-kdm-config-file kdebase-kdm

when all is installed, type

service dm restart

And now, all must be fine

Remember, if you use SOS or Mandriva Enhanced RPM's, you *must* remove KDE first from your system completely. Regardless of what you used from Cooker or Mandriva in it's stable form.
