All errors associated with the loading of /etc/X11/xorg.conf can be found in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/messages. I would look at these two files for errors which may help determine your problem.

Also, as root type these commands from a terminal and post the output:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge

The output from these diagnostic commands may also help us determine your problem.

Another thing just came to mind. You have a new Mandriva 2006 installation. Have you updated using urpmi? There are some problems with xorg as shipped with the Mandriva 2006 CD's that are resolved with an update.

Thanx Daniel for all the effort ure takin to help me :)

As requested:

[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Status: Enabled

Driver: AGPGART

AGP Rate: 8x

Fast Writes: Disabled

SBA: Enabled

[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card

Fast Writes: Supported

SBA: Supported

AGP Rates: 8x 4x

Registers: 0x1f000e1b:0x1f000302

[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge

Host Bridge: PCI device 1106:0204

Fast Writes: Not Supported

SBA: Supported

AGP Rates: 8x 4x

Registers: 0x1f000a0b:0x00000b02

I 'm still going thru the messages log to locate where and when the problem occurred (although i dont see any errors here); meanwhile heres the Xorg.0.log:

Thou should not use Cooker repos with mde and SoS- both are for Mandriva 2006 users.

And last time I used Mandriva with my nvidia card (guess which: a noname FX 5200...) I had OpenGL issues as well, due to bad security settings in a Mandy configuration file, which did not allow 3D acceleration. I hope I will recall which file, since I don't use Mandriva anymore...

R0ck80y:

In your opening post you state that you are new to linux. Using cooker is a bad idea (in your case) since it often requires much tweaking to get it to behave nicely. I think you would be much happier installing Mandriva 2006. My suggestion would be to get a Mandriva One DVD and install from that.

Leave the bleading edge cooker install for a later time, after you become more proficient in the ways of linux.

Just my $0.02

Using cooker as a beginner is like trying to run before you have gotten up onto your feet to learn to walk.

Delete your cooker version and download the 3 cdrom set from Mandriva or one of its mirrors. You are going to find that only a tiny percentage of even experienced members use cooker and then mostly for on odd package or two so that if they have a problem then they have some idea of what package may have caused it. If you do the whole OS from cooker then no one know swhere to start from first.

Cheers. John.

Does this suggest that direct rendering will not be working?

Most likely yes :P

the glx module is what gets the opengl working with nvidia. Some other cards like Intel/ATI use DRI. I checked the xorg.conf above, and it has the glx module listed. However, I think maybe they need to do:

urpmi Mesa

and get the Mesa opengl libraries installed, and perhaps this will help. I always have them installed on my systems, and I have an Nvidia card too (Geforce 4 TI 4400). It is case-sensitive so has to be Mesa as above, and not mesa.

Hmmmm.....so no cookers is it then?!!! Well, in that case,i'll change as soon as i get my hands on the 'non-cooker' version. Till then i'll have to live with this :P Actually i didnt want a user-friendly linux-- i love to do geeky stuff and only linux gives u the freedom to play with the os, something the "windows-makers" havent allowed. Even in windows i use firefox, mplayer, vlc, gaim....which owe their origins to the gr8 linux movement. Havent touched IE in years now !!! So i thght abt playing games in linux( apart from the programmin work that i do in linux all the time) so that i dont have to move to windows everytime for gaming .

Anyway i have uninstalled the drivers using urpme ( #urpme --nodeps --noscripts dkms-nvidia) and now things are fine i.e typing 'glxinfo ' doesn't black out the screen and the xorg.conf file is back to the earlier version.

I would still like to try one more time to install the drivers ( dont worry, i dont have ne imp data to lose lest things go wrong ) but this time using the .run files. I wanted to know which .run files to download for the config that i have:-

amd 2800+ 64 bit, nvidia geforce 5200fx 128mb

Since the 1.0.8762 version didnt work, will some earlier version work with the card that i have?? Also i've not installed Mesa--should i do it bfor installn??

Thanx in advance :)

Cooker uses Xorg7.1, which the nvidia drivers don't exactly work with. See my thread on the issue.

I'm running kernel 2.6-12-12mdk nd have the source installed. I think the xorg.conf version is 6.9...i saw it during boot or somewhere.

Does this mean i can install the drivers albeit the older versions?? If yes, which one should i install or let urpmi install it??

(i accidently posted this reply in tyme's thread...admins plz delete that post of mine :) )

If he installed the driver from cooker, most likely this is caused by the fact that the place where the glx module is saved changed between xorg 6.9 and 7.0 in mandriva, he could manually change the path. I am not using mandriva right now and can't check, i believe the module is libglx..XX.so or something like that but don't know where it is hidden.

edit: instead of load "glx" try load "/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so"

edit: instead of load "glx" try load "/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so"

I had done that too but still the screen would blank out; but as ian mentioned i hadnt installed Mesa so now that i've removed nvidia, i can try installin Mesa ( thru urpmi , i guess) first and then nvidia. My question is should i let urpmi install the drivers or should i install some older 1.0.6XXX or 1.0.7XXX versions of nvidia drivers for the card that i have . Am i wrong when i say that the 1.0.8XXX drivers dont comply with the 5200fx card???
