reboot problem

hi,

first, sorry for my english !! I'm french

I'm a newbie in the Linux world, as I've just installed Mandriva 2006 powerpack (and I love It !!!)

Here's my problem:

when I want to disconnect and reboot to Lilo, when I choose "reboot" everything's going ok, but at the end, when the message "rebooting, please wait" (or something like that...) appears, nothing happens...I just have a black screen and nothing else...so I have to reboot manually, which is not that bad, but I would like everything to work !!

It's strange, because when I choose "shutdown", it works OK.

I've heard about APCI problems, but as I'm a newbie, I don't know what to do...

Here's my config:

Sony Vaio VGN A517B notebook

pentium M740 1,80mhz

512 Mo ddr2

ATI Radeon X600 Mobility 256 Mo (PCI-e)

HD 80 Go :

- c: 15 go --> Win XP

- d: 55 go --> Linux (Mandriva, /home, swap) and "non executables files" (Music, Movies, iso, ...) for XP

- g: 10 go --> fat32 for common files linux/xp

Thanks a lot for you advices and suggestions !!

Welcome aboard. :beer:

I guess that ACPI is not enabled, thus check the following setting:

Open the MCC (aka "Configure your computer") and go to the system-startup section at the bottom of the left hand. Now click on "bootup preferences" (the black monitor with the green shutdown symbol). In there, check if the ACPI checkbox is enabled. If not, click on it and continue until the system has finished the process. Then try rebooting again.

Sorry, It doesn't work...ACPI is enabled.

The weird thing is that it works with "shutdown" and not with "reboot"...

Anyway, thanks for your help !!

Seriously, I would install GRUB boot loader and then switch to it as the default bootloader. When you do that then reboot, and when you get back into your account go to Uninstall software in MCC and delete Lilo entirely. Despite Lilo having been around quite a bit longer than Grub it still can be flakey.

Cheers. John.

Just out of curiosity... have your tried if it is all "possibilities" that fail for rebooting? e.g. hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL will reboot the system, same, launching "init 6". Give them a try in various boot scenarios (e.g. try in failsafe mode). If those fail too, then it must be an ACPI problem - maybe there is a fix for it, maybe not. And it is well possible that it is a lilo-only related problem, as John pointed out.

Okay, I'll try various boot scenarios and tell you if it works...

I think I could be a problem related to my ati radeon X600 mobility graphic card...apparently many Aty user have this problem...something about drivers perhaps ???

anyway, I'll tell you if it works.

And again, thanks for your help, I really appreciate the Linux community for that !!!

maybe the noapic or nolapic options help too (can be found in system-startup, too), this was the only chance to get an omnibook 6100 to shutdown properly for some time with late 2.4-kernels
