wakish
Hello everyone! I heard many good thing about AVG free edition and i set out to try it just now on mandriva. The installation went fine, but i'm having the following: 1) permission problem when i click on "Update". It says Update process failed.. Reason: Sorry, you do not have permission to execute avgupdate 2) For its on-access Email scanner, it needs the package Dazuko Is it ok to install this package? 3) I have set AVG to start on boot. It's running, but i do not see its icon on my start-up icons. Why? Regards! Edited June 26, 2006 by wakish
tyme
1) permission problem when i click on "Update". It saysYou will need to run avgupdate as root. Open a terminal and su to root, then run avgupdate.2) For its on-access Email scanner, it needs the package DazukoIs it ok to install this package? I've never used it myself, but I imagine it would be...only one way to find out, right?3) I have set AVG to start on boot. It's running, but i do not see its icon on my start-up icons. Why? I'm not sure I know what you mean by start-up icons...could you please be more specific?
wakish
Well, AVG is not worth the hastle in linux!!! I think it has to make some improvements for its Linux version. I'm going to uninstall it. BUT it's very nice for Windows!

brian w.
Tyme's answer for gaining permission for updates to avg got me through this mess. I was able to figure all the steps out from there. The "Long-Winded" solution is this: I'm using the KDE Desktop (Mandriva 2006) First, open the Konsole Type su, and hit Enter It will ask for your password... enter your password, and hit enter. Then, type avgupdate A bunch of stuff pertaining to paths & the such will appear. Ignore this stuff. Next, type avggui, and this will open up the avg program. Now, just click the Update tab. It should start updating automatically at this point, and after updating it will automatically install the update(s). Please excuse my going into so much detail on this, but if there are some Linux newbies reading this that are as "Linux illiterate" as I, they may need a step-bystep instruction. I was just fortunate enough to stumble on the protocol. Bro Brian
