weird quirks on new laptop

Recommended Posts

I installed Mandriva 2006 on my new Acer laptop. I have been having some problems that are not present in windows. They're nothing major but more of an annoyance.

If I go to open an application it opens 2, 3 and even 4 instances of that application. If I go to mouseover something it will minimize the window or if it's asking me a question, like would I like to install something, if I mouse over one of the buttons it's as if I pressed it.

Also, how to I get my computer to go into sleep mode when I'm not using it for a while?

Thanks! I've never used a laptop before so this is a new experience for me.

For the power, you should just need to go into Configure Your Desktop and the Power Control. Under the battery option (I think), under the last tab, there is abutton for the ACPI helper. Click this and supply root password and then enable the options you want for suspend/sleep/etc/etc. Then reboot.

I'm not sure about the other options. What model Acer is it? My wife has an Acer Travelmate 2310 and I've not noticed these problems on that. Although I've not spent too much time in it to be honest.

It's just a thought, and you probably already know this, but I've just installed 2006 on my Vaio with Wifi too and the touchpad was going crazy doing all sorts of things I didn't like, like your lappie.

With mine I edited the "synaptics" section in /etc/x11/xorg.conf file. I just wanted basic function from the touchpad and the ability to plug in a 3 button optical usb mouse. Now it works like a dream.

So this is what I changed it to;

It sounds like touch-to-click is enabled on the trackpad - knoba's suggestion should fix that.

I always use a small USB mouse with my laptop - I can't stand trackpads.
