neilinoz
I realise that this subject has been done to death a little bit (I DID actually serach for it using the search engine) but there doesn't appear to be any real consensus as to a list of acceptable players. Does someone know of the best media players for Mandriva Linux 2006? I play oggs on my PC and I don't wish to sit there converting all my .ogg files to .mp3s for any media player I buy (plus I know that .ogg files are oss while .mp3 is proprietary) I know many of you have ipods. I suppose I would seriously consider this if they could play .ogg files, or didn't require software mods or whatever. Ipods are also expensive, and I would prefer something cheaper. As far as I know, only IRiver seems to produce media players that can play .ogg files, but I read an Amazon.co.uk review where some guy got very upset that his IRiver didn't work with his Linux box. So obviously I got concerned. Edited March 2, 2006 by neilinoz
scarecrow
Amarok is dogz blx- it plays anything and has the most sexy UI. But almost any KDE media player should play .ogg right out of the box. For video, Mplayer/kmplayer is my choice, but there are also many other solutions (kaffeine, VLC, gxine... you name it). And currently, some 90% of the portable media players (if not more) do support the usb_storage protocol, so mounting them under Linux is a non-issue. Sorry - maybe I didn't make myself clear enough! When I say "Media player" I'm referring to the little things that you walk around with playing music, not the software used to play them on a Linux box. (I actually use TOTEM to play my oggs.) :D
solarian
I have an oldish 256mb iRiver mp3 player and it works well with Mandriva. Of course I've formated it with the iRiver software to be like usb storage, i.e., skip the iRiver windows software in between. Haven't tried it on recently installed 2006 though (forgot where I put it, so can't test atm). p.s. imho, Amarok is too crowded and heavy. Besides it has too many features which I don't need, that's why I use XMMS (I've never managed to run Beep for some misterious reason)
solarian
oh, btw, how is it with ipod and linux, are there any problems with storing usual mp3 files on an ipod from linux?
sellis
I have a Samsung YP-U1X, but I've only transferred stuff onto it from a Windows PC so far. I'll give it a quick test when I get home this evening and get back to you. BTW, if you're also looking for an in-car unit, I really can't recommend what I have - a Yakumo Hypersound Car. True, it looks awesome (plays OGGs, MP3s and WMAs from USB stick, MMC/SD card or CD, and of course CDs as well), but it has some serious flaws in its firmware. See reviews at http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...4307734-5733220
sellis
I'll give it a quick test when I get home this evening and get back to you. Yes, this works. As expected it mounts as a removable drive, and you just drag files onto it with Konqueror (or use cp from the shell, of course).

So obviously I got concerned. I have a iRiver H340 media player. It's a wonderful machine and works perfectly with any Linux I tried, including Mdv. The player is completely OS agnostic, so it's really easy. It basically shows up as a USB drive, and you can do whatever you want with it. I have also heard complaints about later players from iRiver (iFP, I think), which seem to be designed to only work with MS Windows. If that's true, one should obviously avoid such models. It's a pity that iRiver spoiled their reputation among Linux users. I find their players the best of the market (but then, I'm not a specialist). tubasoldier
The Rio Karma also plays ogg files. However they are no longer manufactured so you have to get them off e-bay or a resale store. The RCA Lyra connects as a usb device. You can transfer files to it as if it were a hard drive. Same as the IRiver. However the RCA Lyra does not do ogg. Most mp3 players will connect as a usb mass storage device. All but the iPod. But as far as i know the Karma and IRiver are the only ones that do ogg. Gannin
I sent Rio an e-mail once suggesting that they add the ability to play ogg files back into their players, and they said they would pass the suggestion along. Of course, now that another company has bought Rio, who knows what's going to happen to them. But in the mean time, there's always the GP2X :). Jza
Vorbis site has a good database of companies making ogg-compatible devices. Also most of them are koreans so that mean they are pretty good. Have a look there and I am sure you might be able to order a couple. Since there is not like pushed by a major brand they are also cheaper. Gannin
Are you sure about that? I spent some time poking around the Vorbis site, and I found some links to other sites that use the ogg format, and I found some links to software players that use the ogg format, but I didn't find anything about portable players there. If you had a link, that would be appreciated :).
Jza
I think you were on the wrong site, you need the .org not the .com. http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/PortablePlayers
wilcal
Does someone know ofthe best media players for Mandriva Linux 2006? I bought a SanDisk Sansa e130 a couple weeks ago and it's a Plug n Play with Mandy 2006.
Gannin
Thanks for the link :). You are correct, I was looking at the .com.
