Kieth
For a long time, I have tried to use adobe acrobat reader to read some books I have on cds. The problem was using the search engine in the adobe reader. Today, with wine, I was able to open book, using the following command: bash-3.00$ wine /mnt/cdrom/misc/acro_win/reader/acrord32.exe. It opened fine. I can even use the search aspect. What I mean is that there are links on the pdf pages, that when I click on them, it actually takes me to the desired page. The problem now is that the pages are un-legable. Everything is black. I am attaching a snapshot. Any help in resolving the problem (even in another way - virtual desktop?) would be appreciated. ianw1974
You shouldn't need to use Adobe Reader in wine, since there is a version available for Linux now. Maybe this would work better instead.
Kieth
The problem using the acroreader for linux is that the "search" part never works. That is, when I click on a link, it cannot find the page. Attached is a snapshot.
ianw1974
If you really have to use the wine version, and not something like xpdf or gpdf instead, have you installed the windows fonts to allow wine to use these? You need to copy the windows ttf fonts to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF This is what I did when I had font problems with Lotus Notes, and this did the trick for me. Kieth
In MCC, I installed all of the Windows fonts. I did not previously check to see if they were put in the file you mentioned. Here is what's in that file: file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/fonts.cache-1 file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/fonts.dir file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/fonts.scale file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximbi.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximb.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximri.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximr.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirbi.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirb.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirri.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirr.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisbi.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisb.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisri.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisr.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraBd.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraBI.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraIt.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraMoBd.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraMoBI.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraMoIt.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraMono.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraSeBd.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/VeraSe.ttf file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/Vera.ttf I personally do not believe I have the right fonts there, as I need New Times Roman, amongst others. ianw1974
By default you get limited fonts. And probably what you're seeing right now is font substitution, although not very good font substitution! :P Good luck when you get home. Kieth
Well, I moved a lot of fonts into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF. I took them from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf. Instead, the whole area is black. Kieth
Kieth
Just to make sure I covered more bases, I also tried gpdf, evince, Kpdf, Xpdf, Adobe Reader (for linux), and KGhostview. I can see the page (and print) just fine. It's just that when I click on a link, they cannot go to that page.
Kieth
Well, I'm still plugging away trying to get this thing working. Just a couple of thoughts. I have tried many different ways to read these books. For example, I copied the entire cd to my computer, then accessed it with the linux acroreader and the acrobat adobe 4 (that's on the cd). The results were the same as the above posts. With the above posts, I have been starting the acroreader directly from the cd, with the command: wine /mnt/cdrom/misc/acro_win/reader/acrord32.exe. Then I open the .pdf file that's on the cd. In the past I've tried to open the acroreader I have in WindowsXP, but I can't because in the command line there is a blank: file:///mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe. Is there a way to start the acroreader with wine even though there is a blank in the command line between Acrobat and 4.0?
ianw1974
The problem you have is between wine and the way Acrobat Reader is running under it. This could be to do with fonts, or some other problem between wine and Acrobat Reader. Have a look on the winehq website, and check out the info they have on running the Windows version of Acrobat Reader. There might be some info there on what to do to sort it out. Kieth
How can I get wine to run the acroreader in Windows XP, when there is a gap in the command line? The location is: /mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe. As you can see, there is a gap between Acrobat and 4.0. When I invoke wine, it states: bash-3.00$ wine /mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe wine: cannot find '/mnt/windows/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat'
daniewicz
try "Acrobat 4.0" ?
ianw1974
Normally, the best way to launch wine is with the full windows type path, so: wine "c:\program files\program directory\program filename.exe" all within the quotes. Wine knows the c: drive stuff, so it tends to help to launch this way.
Kieth
Thanks for the replies. The actual problem, though, is that there is a "space" between the word 'Acrobat' and '4.0'. Therefore wine cannot find the program. bash-3.00$ wine /c/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat 4.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe wine: cannot find '/c/Programmi/Adobe/Acrobat' In the above example, and in the one I gave yesterday, wine stops checking at 'Acrobat'. It does not look for 'Acrobat 4.0' because it does not see or recognise the space between the word 'Acrobat' and the number '4.0'.
