EHCanadian
um I'm kinda confused as to why it seems when I setup the network info in the install setup it fails to connect to the net. I even tried to ping another local lan computer and I get connection: Network is unreachable My PCMCIA card is ident as eth0 & when I run cardctl ident Socket 0: Product info: "3Com", "Megahertz 574B", "B", "001" Manfid: 0x0101, 0x0574 Function: 6 (network) any ideas as I didn't install a gui so I'm working with vim & shell I can ping the localhost and get a reply but that just the lo IP: 192.168.0.5 SUB: 255.255.255.0 DNS: 192.168.0.1 (Routor) Gate: 192.168.0.
ianw1974
Can you post the results from an ifconfig -a to make sure all is OK there? I've seen some cards misbehave, so try disabling apic on your system, and see if connectivity starts to work. To disable System/Configuration/Configure Your Computer/Boot/Boot Loader and then enable the option to disable apic, OK all screens, and reboot, and see if the network card starts to work. Another thing to check, and probably best to do first. Do you have a link light on the card? Does the port on the router also have a link light? This will determine if the link is OK first of all. If not, change the network cable.
EHCanadian
To disable System/Configuration/Configure Your Computer/Boot/Boot Loader and then enable the option to disable apic, OK all screens, and reboot, and see if the network card starts to work. um I kind of mentioned that I didn't install a gui so I'm working with vim & shell :) so a path and a file to edit would be great :) there was a link between the routor and the card but since I pulled it out and atemped to place it back in it not light anymore so I'm asuming something is up with the pcmcia thing about watching the slot.. then again i did a format and a reinstall thinking it might have been something I miss configured but when i installed I only installed the basic 88mb so its running almost bare so I might have to install the pcmia manager but unsure about how to pull that off Edited February 17, 2006 by EHCanadian
lynchmob
Go to /etc/lilo.conf and add "noapic" to the append line. Example: image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="noapic resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent" Then run /sbin/lilo and reboot. How old is this card? Maybe it's too new for 8.2 to support it. lynchmob

EHCanadian
Ok I kinda figured out my problem it was to do with the init load order.. network was geting started before pcmcia had a chance to load. so what I have to do now is let the laptop load up log in as root stop the network service and start it again. my new question is how can i rearange my init boot order to load the pcmcia first then start the network? scarecrow
my new question is how can i rearange my init boot order to load the pcmcia first then start the network? Not sure, as my distro works differently, but just try editing etc/modprobe.conf and adding there first "yenta_socket" and right after that "your_NIC_modulename". EHCanadian
I installed webmin and set a new service called it Network-Restart and set the /etc/init.d/network restart and then set the runlevel 3 @ 90 and it restarts the network and I'm happy :) so in the end i solved my problem :)
