ilia_kr
I wonder, is it really safe to update/install rpms from a web. Are there viruses/malisious softare hidden inside rmps and freely distributed on various servers? I remember that some time ago, there was a Linux virus inside FireFox distribution. Could it happen again (yes i assume...)? How can we protect ourself in these cases?
ianw1974
Most of the rpms you can download have signatures and md5 sums. Although, when 2006 was released, a lot of the signatures were screwed, so no-one really knew if what they were installing was safe or not. Now it's all OK, it got resolved. Normal ftp mirrors could be breached, there is a possibility of this. Although maybe unlikely! I would install from the web using the boot.iso if my link was fast enough. Unfortunately it's not, so I tend to install only from ISO's that I've burnt.
