ati 9600 newbie help to install drivers

I have been trying to ge the best drivers installed, 3d acceleration (DRI) for about a week now. I have searched and searched till early morning but cant seem to get the best drivers for my card and system. I would really appreciate any assistance. I have tried downloading the driver installer package from ati for cards 8500 and up. I though everything went fine, but still couldnt get past the splash screen in Americas Army. DRI was enabled, which is what research has told me to check. I am running manriva 2005 LE on a P4 1.8gh . Please let me know if there is any helpful info to provide, and possibly the command for it. Thanks in advance for any efforts with my situation.

also, please post the output from your fps with the following command:

 

glxgears

 

this will help us find out if it's actually running. Aso, is the game a true Linux game, or are you running it under wine/cedega?!?

I have found the driver that i am certain will work with my system. But when i go to install it

I'd be tempted to rename the libGL.so.1.2 file (add .old to the end perhaps), and then try the rpm -i fglrx...........

 

If that then installs OK, you can go back to the /usr/X11R6/lib directory, and see if it created a libGL.so.1.2 and compare the date/time of the files to see which one is older.

 

Then, see if you can run fglrxconfig afterwards to set up the ATI card. However, with LE2005, I've never had problems getting it to work. This is what I did for my Radeon 9250 R925 card.

 

1. Install Mesa (urpmi Mesa)

2. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

 

Make sure "load dri" exists on the modules section, and also check for the following:

 

Section "DRI"

Mode 0666

EndSection

 

if this doesn't exist, then add this to the bottom of the file.

 

Reboot the system, and see if you can run the glxinfo and glxgears commands again. Do this before installing the fglrx file because if you can get it working with this, will save you a major headache.

First, I would remove the fglrx program. The easiest way is to:

 

rpm -e fglrx....full name of file.rpm

 

make sure it's removed, it'll say it's not installed, so do it again just to make sure. Then try the method I mentioned above to try and get OpenGL running without using the ATI Drivers.

Pry one of many dum questions, but how do I know what the name of the package is that I need to Uninstall. I tried to uninstall the package that i am about to install and of course it said not installed so i ran it again then tried to install it and got same error.

The package name is the one you downloaded, so fglrx.....whatever this bit is....rpm.

 

If it says it's not installed, continue with the procedures I noted for installing Mesa, and configuring X to use dri.

I download the installer version of the ati drivers since i was getting the same errors when trying to install form the rpm. after i installed mesa i am now able to get glxgears running at 707 with 170 fps. but when i try to run armyops the splash screen comes up and and then it reports a missing symbol error and then closes.

The lack of the "Section DRI" bit will be stopping OpenGL from working.

 

If this is a clean installation, you may be better reinstalling again, and trying the tips without using the ATI drivers you downloaded. The xorg.conf has loads and loads of things in it now, that relate to running fglrxconfig.

 

If you can't do a clean installation, then I would suggest you work with getting the xorg drivers installed that you downloaded. Are they the latest version? If not, make sure you've downloaded the latest ones, and use these.

 

I have NEVER got the ATI drivers to work. At least, this was before they released the ATI installer. The method I listed above, worked for me on my card without using ATI's driver, and complication.

When you mention reinstalling are you talking about the whole distro or just the drivers for the video card. With how determined i am at getting this card installed corectly, i will gladlly start over from scratch and reformat if that is my best bet. If i do reformat, then i dont need to download anything from ati Correct? just use the drivers that are included in the distrobution. I thought in your instruction on post number 4, i was supposed to be installing the drivers that i downloaded from ati. Or were you just making do with what i had. As i said above i will gladly reformat if you suggest.

I only suggested the reformat and new install since the ATI driver has introduced a load of stuff. Normally, what I've done with LE2005 is to install it, and then to get the OpenGL working, just these steps:

 

urpmi Mesa (will also install libmesa dependency)

 

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make sure the "load dri" appears as in my config file above, and the "Section DRI" also as per my xorg.conf as well.

 

On rebooting, this worked a treat. It might not be the same FPS as the ATI card, but it works, and I don't really fancy using their driver and breaking it :P

 

My card is an ATI Radeon 9250 R925 with 128MB RAM, and I get about 1200fps which is OK for me, since I don't play games. Maybe the ATI driver could get me more.

 

As I said, if you can do a new installation, to try what I mentioned above, then excellent, go for it, really. It will mean we don't have any confusing stuff from ATI's driver. If it doesn't work, then you can attempt the ATI install again. I do believe they have a nice installer now, but as I said, I've never used it.

 

If you still find you have problems after this, I will install the ATI driver on my machine at home, and post back how I did it, so that you too can follow, and get your machine working.
