daniewicz
hanes: Is there anything in your BIOS which has been set to limit you to UDMA 2?
hanes
IBM has a weird Bios utility... But I can say I did not find one option that had the letters UDMA in it... so no :) Anyone other tips? Gowator
Your disk is only at UDMA 2? Either you have a very old disk or something is not set correctly in your BIOS. Note your low buffered disk read of 23.4 MB/sec. Not good. This is more or less what I get for a USB2 disk which I'd never consider using for a main disk. hanes
Does that mean the hardware is UDMA2? Or is it a setting? Here is another computer (a desktop, athlon 2500, newer computer) and again I really notice a slow hard drive. For example when I am downloading at high speeds, I can barely view a picture. /dev/hda: multcount = 16 (on) IO_support = 1 (32-bit) unmaskirq = 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on) keepsettings = 0 (off) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 256 (on) geometry = 59554/16/63, sectors = 60030432, start = 0 Model=Maxtor 93073H4, FwRev=BAC51KJ0, SerialNo=N4119ZVC Config={ Fixed } RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=57 BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16 CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=60028319 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120} PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4 DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2 AdvancedPM=yes: disabled (255) WriteCache=enabled Drive conforms to: ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 0: * signifies the current active mode Yet again I have only UDMA2. Am I doing something wrong? I dont change anything on my mandriva 2006 installs. And as for hard drive speeds I never notice ANY problems in Windows... daniewicz
You say you are posting results from another computer? The disk is the same from your previous post: Maxtor 93073H4 Even the serial number is the same.
hanes
uh :) Maybe I posted the same then Hah... Both computers seem to be a lil slow, and I started this thread as a general Mandriva Speed problem, not about my specific computer. But maybe I just have an old hard drive on that PC? scarecrow
Whenever sure where the log you're posting post is belonging, come back... :P But since both computers seem "a bit slow" it doesn't really matter which log you attach, does it? hanes
well yeah I guess. This is my desktop, and I have always felt slow HD speeds. Why? How do I increase the speed? EG when I am copying gigs of music to the HD the computer is mighty slow. When I do it in windows it is noticeably faster.
