shorewall question [solved]

I decided to remove guarddog and go with the native firewall which is accessed through MCC on my 2005 LE box. After configuring, a service shorewall was turned on. I also noticed that the service iptables was off. Is this normal?

 

My feeble memory tells me that when guarddog was installed and running, the service iptables was on.

 

I tries a search here on MUB, but found nothing.

AFAIK, shorewall is just like guardog, it depends on iptables, so they should be running at the same time... well, you can just define it to be always on via MCC, so as with shorewall

It appears that what I am observing is normal.

 

Iptables is a module, the iptables service loads it then dies.

iptables is a kernel module, and shorewall sends iptables commands directly to the kernel, so iptable (the service) shouldn't be running.

 

Guarddog send iptables commands to the iptables service so the service needs to be running
