What modem is it? Make/Model?

Check this website:

http://linmodems.org/

During installation, the OS normally tells you if it has a problem with a modem attached to your machine and to visit this website. If your modem wasn't connected during installation, then you probably wouldn't have noticed this.

See if your modem is supported here, will help you to get it working. Although I would have thought that most external are easy enough to sort out. One thing though. Is your BIOS configured with an option for Plug and Play OS? If so, make sure this option is disabled.

This can cause hardware detection problems and could be why drakconnect can't find your modem!

It's a while since I used a modem but my memory is that you need a different serial cable for Linux. Windows uses a "Null Modem" cable which crosses pins 2 and 3 i.e. pin 2 on the computer is connected to pin 3 on the modem. I think maybe Linux wants a straight - through cable i.e. pin 2 to pin 2 and pin 3 to pin 3.

Somebody shout "rubbish!" if I am out of date.

I have previously used a zoom V92 external modem with mandriva. It was detected no problem. This is just a thought but check MCC, security, firewall and check the net device is selected for ppp+.

i wonder if this is similar to the problem i posted in "hardware", where kppp doesn't set up or talk to my v92 external modem? Everything i've read suggests external modems should work fine, and yet....
