what drivers would i need for installing a modem or rather for helping linux mandrake to realize that the modem is present ???

Depends on the modem... some winmodems have no real chances to work, or *even* being detected.

Which modem do you want to use?

It would be fair to say that if Mandriva cannot detect a modem then its truly likely to be a winmodem. I call it garbage that pretends to be a modem. Despite the fact that a lot of winmodems can ultimately me made to work in a fashion in Linux, they are truly not worth the effort to do so. Realistically they do not work reliably or efficiently in the Windows world for which they are supposed to be designed for.

I agree with Aussie John from lovely Cairns!

My modem is an old 1997(?) ELSA Microlink 56K. It is an external modem and connected via COM connector. Even the latest snazzyest model with all bells and whistles couldn't work any better.

At any rate, you can be pretty sure that if the modem is of the external sort, it is not a crappy Win-modem and so that it should work with just about any Linux. You could use KPPP to configure it and for connecting-up to the net.

Just to make your words more exact - "external sort connecting to COM-port". It seems to me that there are external USB Winmodems.

i have an external us robotics v.92 modem, kppp reads the modem well enough and the connection is made, but I STILL CAN"T LOG ONTO THE INTERNET !!!!! the browers don't work ???????????

 

MUST be that damn Mandriva control center that is acting retarded.... and not making the connection, what the hell is the problem/????

May you give more details and be more specific? What are the exact messages given by the browser?

Open a terminal, and issue "ifconfig" as root. What is its output?

Issue "ip route show" as root. What is its output? Copy all the outputs and post them here.

Most chances are that you're right. Unfortunately.

What seems to me most probable is that pppd drops the connection after some time, but it doesn't somehow get felt by kppp, so the route table is not modified upon disconnection. Unfortunately, I finished all my dealings with pppd about two years ago and have forgotten most of its quirks since, so I don't remember them all by heart :(

Try "grep"-ping "pppd" out of /var/log/messages and post the output.

Additionally, try to define the connection via "drakconnect" instead of "kppp".

when i type /var/log/messenger, it says no such directory so i used /var/log/pppd and then it took me back to the root prompt, when i tried grep- ping pppd it was bashed, no such file or directory ???

 

when i try and connect through drakeconnect, the connection fails and the modem connection is never made, i wonder if i said screw the modem and got a cable connection would it have a better chance of working, becuase for some reason Mandriva has a significant problem, because it isn't kppp, it is Mandriva, because when i had mandrake 9.2 this was not an issue at ALL....

 

what do you think ????
