make config (no rpms) issue / fixed

Just a story to be spidered by google. anyone having problems might find this and have a quick solution. I've used various linux distros including a couple of versions of Mandrake (up to 10.1) and downloaded and installed Mandrivia 2006 today. The process was super easy. Moving my contact list and kmail config + emails was a breeze (as all i had to do was move some files from another partition).

 

I wanted to install SuperKaramba. I noticed in the last step of the install, mandrake did some update jive and I assumed this to be the equiliv of downloading the cz files and configuring urpmi, so I never bothered going to easyurpmi.

 

superkaramba was not a found rpm so i downloaded the tarball and started the compile process. running config put me into a slight dependancy hell... to quote:

Superkaramba can't be compiled

because of missing Python libraries/headers.

 

i installed python devel and a bunch of libraries and got the same thing. If you study the output/log it looks like xmms isn't installed. I ran urpmi xmms and it couldn't find anything.... aaaahhhhh.... easyurpmi here I come. Low and behold, there's a flippin' superkaramba rpm for mandrivia.

Lesson learned. Never assume a distro's install will do everything for you!
