Jza
From the mandrake hardware certification database I found that mostly the logictech webcams are the only option pretty much. [Webcam] AIPTEK apc300 (Mandriva Linux 2006, x86) Compatible [Webcam] LOGITECH quickcam xpress (Mandriva Linux 2006, x86) Compatible [Webcam] PHILIPS (Mandriva Linux 2006, x86) http://wwwnew.mandriva.com/en/hardware/ Edited November 16, 2005 by Jza
richardwest
Or you could use any old video camera with webcam_server (Part of the xawtv package.
aRTee
Note that for the Philips based webcams - the ones that use the pwc driver, you have to have contrib added (see easy-urpmi link at the top of each page here), and do: urpmi dkms-pwc to have the full vga resolution. And forget about the sxga resolution shots these can take according to the box it came in, the sensor is only vga, the rest is done in software on windows... gluttony
no, i'm not looking for any particular model, just one that has got a microphone and that works with linux. is there one that you can recommend? thanks! paul
JonEberger
this is actually a really good thread. i know that earlier this summer i tried to make an old intel webcam work and it was "flakey' at best.
aRTee
I'm not sure about the microphone - never used it, it does show up as mixer, but I have an external one, which I actually also don't have any use for... but the video (VGA, 640x480) is fine on mine: pwc750 (which is essentially the 740 with a nice stand). cedbor
At this address, http://mxhaard.free.fr/index.html you'll find a lot of stuff about webcams and linux. You have to compile the kernel module yourself, but it's easy and very stable. I personaly own a labtec "Webcam Pro", the microphone is barely usable but image quality is very good, and it's very cheap.
