Arne
Hello All, I have successfully installed 2006OE in a dual boot with XP on my PC some days ago. Before I installed 2006 I had a working network where I shared Internet, files and printers between the XP box and a notebook running mdv 10.1 using samba, cups and PCMCIA wireless modem installed on the PC. The PC have all my resources i.e printers, scanner, USB2 high speed ports, etc.. With 2006 installed the xp-linux network is broken and I can't establish internet connection to 2006OE and I need to make 2006 act as host to mdv 10.1. in the same way as XP did. Status. I have access to Internet on the XP I can ping: mdv 10.1 on notebook from mdv 2006 mdv 2006 on PC from notebook 10.1 wireless modem address from 2006 as well as from notebook 10.1 My goal is: When I boot 2006 it must share Internet, files and printers with 10.1 on the notebook When I boot XP it must share Internet, files and printers with 10.1 on the notebook Is this possible??????? To take one problem at the time, I want to concentrate on Internet connection to 2006 as the first priority. I have both “samba client” and “Smb4K” installed but not configured. I have configured my wireless modem with a howto from the manufacturer http://mycusthelp.com/sierrawireless/suppo...FilC=&KEY=Linux When I run the command “pppd call ac555-1x” the connection appear to open. Only some lines is shown below: Serial connection established. using channel 1 Using interface ppp0 Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem ........ CHAP authentication succeeded ............ not replacing existing default route to eth0 [192.168.1.1] local IP address 10.31.130.195 remote IP address 10.24.17.21 primary DNS address 172.25.3.1 secondary DNS address 172.25.3.2 Tests in mcc report ppp0 says something like “You doesn't seems to have an Internet ...” and any browser fails and report network problem. Running “service shorewall stop” doesn't help. Can anyone help me, please. I can post any command output you want. Any advice, hint or point to the right direction will be highly appreciated. My linux experience is only a few months and 2 weeks on 2006OE so I am still a newbie.
ianw1974
Hi Arne, I'd be tempted to go into MCC and networking, and make sure the connection chosen is LAN and not ADSL, PPP or anything else. Then, I'd be tempted to go to HardDrake and choose Run Config when the network card is selected, and make sure all the IP Address information is correct. After that, check your /etc/resolv.conf to make sure you have your ISP's DNS Servers here, or that it is using your router's IP Address for name resolution. Then, go to a terminal prompt, type nslookup and then type a domain name, eg: linux.org and see what it reports back.
Arne
Hello Ianw, Yes you are right. I have tried to setup modem connection for my modem and a lan connection, and that was the reason for lack of connection. This is confirmed by the output from the script command which I only posted some lines from. The line in question said all the time somthing like " not replacing 192.168.1.1" which is(was) the IP address for the PC. When I reconfigure the LAN and change it to DHCP it worked like a dream. This reply is made in 2006 internet connection. Then i run the script again and line above (in brackett) did not show. Some times you got stuck with one approach, sorry for that. Thank you Ianw. What would be nice now is to have an icon on the desktop which run the script command "pppd call ac555-1x" and then "Opera" so I don't need to type it every time. But I have to find out how to do it. Any tip???? Now I go on try make the Internet connection on the notebook 10.1 which dont work at the moment. mcc Setup "share internet connection" comes up with some proxy active and I don't think I need that. But I am uncertain if I should untick it. Any tip???? Again, thank you for help. :D
Arne
Ianw, resolv.conf look like this: [root@linuxhost arne]# cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 172.25.3.1 nameserver 172.25.3.2 # nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 172.25.3.1 # ppp temp entry nameserver 172.25.3.2 # ppp temp entry I wonder about this #ppp temp entry. Why didn't use it the nameserver at the top? Running root@linuxhost arne]# nslookup linux.org Server: 172.25.3.1 Address: 172.25.3.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: linux.org Address: 198.182.196.48 Is this OK?????? ianw1974
Yes, that's OK. Means internet is working fine, as it's resolving internet addresses.

Create a file with the following lines: pppd call ac555-1x opera then save it, and from the CLI, and the directory you saved it to do: chmod 700 filename Then, create a shortcut on your desktop to this file, and give it a whirl and see what happens. I can't test it exactly just yet, but it should hopefully work for you.
