heather1113
I just got some updates and now I can't seem to get Firefox to open. It works fine from another user account just not mine. I tried to launch it from a terminal and this is what I get (sorry it's so long) (gnome-font-properties:6942): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)'. (Details: serial 2017 error_code 4 request_code 55 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) It looks like a Gnome problem so I opened up gnome-control-center and tried changing the theme/icons but nothing helped. I also looked into the Fonts but everything looked good. I also tried deleting the .metacity folder but that didn't help either. This is making me crazy so thanks for your help.
polemicz
Don't know if you're using cooker, but this is on the 2006 release notes wiki: "During our tests, we discovered the latest version of Java Plugin 1.4.2 (1.4.2_09) packaged by Sun consistently crashes Firefox (as well as Mozilla, Epiphany or Galeon) at startup. We recommend upgrading to Java Plugin 1.5.0_04, downgrading to version 1.4.2_07, or using the Mandriva packages, available from Mandriva Club." Steve Scrimpshire
Also, are both users (the one that it works with and the one that it doesn't) using the same theme/skin for Firefox? Maybe it is a firefox theme/firefox version conflict.
heather1113
Update: It seems that Thunderbird is crashing now too. At least it opens though it crashes if I try and do anything.
daniewicz
try running: firefox -profilemanager This will allow you to create a new profile. Perhaps your current profile is corrupt.
JonEberger
so if i'm on a machine that i have no admin privileges to and don't mind losing the settings i've made, deleting the .mozilla folder (although uncouth and brute) has fixed problems on university suns for me before with mozilla. heather1113
I can open it if I am in my roommates acct. and I su heather and open it that way so I didn't think it was the profile and also I am having crashing problems with Thunderbird as well. But I tried mozilla-firefox -profile manager and got this: [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ firefox -profilemanager bash: firefox: command not found [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ mozilla-firefox -profilemanager (Gecko:4790): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.4/run-mozilla.sh: line 451: 4790 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"} I even tried reinstalling since I had .9 instead of .91(PCLinuxOS) but that didn't help either. I am going insane trying to figure this out Oh, I should add that I know it is 1.0.4 but I just reinstalled and haven't gotten to get my updates yet and this happened with 1.0.7 before I reinstalled. daniewicz
So why doesn't firefox -profilemanager work? Is it firefox you have installed or mozilla?
heather1113
So why doesn't firefox -profilemanager work? Is it firefox you have installed or mozilla? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I tried that first: [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ firefox -profilemanager bash: firefox: command not found [heather@applwibas02-l10-1025 heather]$ mozilla-firefox -profilemanager (Gecko:4790): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.4/run-mozilla.sh: line 451: 4790 Segmentation fault "$prog" ${1+"$@"} but it said command not found so I tried mozilla-firefox instead. heather1113
I would like to thank everyone who tried to help me. I ended up just creating a new user account for myself and moving over most of the stuff and settings and running: chown -R myself:myself /home/myself/ It worked like a dream. I would have just deleted the .mozilla but lots of other things were having problems so........this seemed like the best option.
daniewicz
I'm glad you got things working. B)
Steve Scrimpshire
For clarification: The probable reason that it worked by logging into another account and then su heather is that a simple su does not import heather's environment (.bash_profile, .bashrc, maybe .mozilla, too) but su - heather will import.
