Debian DVD's

Recommended Posts

I've managed to download the first DVD, which took about 3 days.

The second DVD, I've tried but it seems to fail, not sure why. I've been using jigdo to download, since they recommend this.

My question is, do I need the second DVD? Or is the first DVD enough? I'm just curious as to what is on the second DVD.

I don't think you need the second DVD. Myself, I installed Debian from CD. I downloaded the 3 first CDs, I bothered to burn only the first two, and I ended up using only the first one

After that, apt-get/aptitude all the way.

I'm on Cable extreme and used the Calgary University Server for apt-Get.

I started it at 3:30 p.m. and it didn't finish untill 11:30 p.m.. I decided after that

to download the dvds - that way I could still use my computer while the DVDs downloaded. The install was much faster using the media. But Hey, if you can find a faster server for apt-Get, all the power to you.

I've only got 128kbps so I doubt I'll do an apt-get. I have the DVD at least :P

Many thanks for all your input guys, much appreciated. Might be some posts later around the weekend after I've installed :P

If you go with the apt get with mini, be prepared to have it take 6 to 8 hours

to install - I've done it and will not be doing it again. :o

6-8 hours? Nonsense what are you on dialup? B)

On a typical 384k down DSL you cannot download more than 1.44 G (approx. 2 CD's) in 8 hours, so for a full installation the above figure is fair- or even a bit optimistic. For dialup you should count days, not hours.
