Fake Hostname / ident / vhost [solved]

Hi there !! Plz help me !!

well i wasted the last 24 hours finding a solution for following plan:

ok i have a router and 2 pcs... 1 with linux (server) and 1 windows workstation...

the router is blocking all ports but 80 (web) 8767 (teamspeak) 27015-27020 (css server) and 6667 (irc bnc)... all those ports get forwared to my linux server (192.168.0.*)...

on this linux box i have anabled the same ports in the shorewall firewall + the mail outgoing port (postfix)...

i dont have a valid top level domain.. i have a ip 84.113.*.* and a dns/hostname forwarding to this ip -> ston3d.kicks-ass.net ... the router has this ip and gives to my 2 pcs just lan ips

ok rite now i dont have given a hostname/dhcp server name to my linux box... in the /etc/hosts is just -> 127.0.0.1 localhost ...

so what i wanna do now is spoof/mask/hide/fake my ip/hostname or at least just the hostname... and i talk about the ISP hostname... like when u connect to irc it looks like -> user@user.provider.domain ... now i want to fake this ... i mean my bouncer can use vhosts and how do it do that now...

i want to hide my isp hostname and use instead virtual hostnames which are in fact faked... like -> this.is.so.cool.org .. u could also say i want to disable reverse dns lookups or give out fake stuff..

so what do i have to put as hostname @ my linux box and what do i have to enter into /etc/hosts ... and what do i haev to enter as dhcp-server-name... or how do i fake my hostname for irc with vhosts and a bouncer...

or maybe has it dod with IDENT ?

i hope u understand what i mean !! thx alot for any help!

:thanks:

hey.. thx for ya replie but i think thats not exactly what im looking for... im searching for a way to set up my linux box so, that the irc-bouncer hides the hostname while connect to irc... instead of 123123asdasd.user.vie.chello.at for example (reverse dns of ip) i want sumthing like -> i.am.so.cool.org .... a faked hostname that hides the original of the isp... so that i am anonym when i connect through my bouncer... u see hostnames when u do /whois in irc..

im not sure if i have to use vhosts or ident fake and what to set up...

i hope u all not to confused by that much dns and hostnames stuff .....

i mean the 'generic' hostname u get by your ISP..

this is what i wanna hide with my bouncer...

better saied i wanna fake it...

like when u do mode +x on IRC...

and i heared u can do that with linux..

dunno maybe with ident-fake (port 113) or vHosts..

Found this link, seems to be what you're looking for:

http://www.goodchatting.com/articles/archives/000007.php

THHHHX!!!!!!!

this is in fact what im looking for... now a part of my question is answered... i need to set up virtual hosts, not iden-fakers on port 113... thats pretty good to know since there are alot of tutorials which tells u howto set up virtual hosts @ linux..

but there is one part that makes me feel bad...

What happens is that people buy the domain names (ex.am and anymore.net) and then add the "fun" parts of the name in. So flunked.my.final.ex.am actually resolves to a computer out there.

so this is only possible if i buy a top level domain ?!

or does it also work with my dyndns.org hostname ... i have opend an account there and gave my ip a dns hostname ... but it isnt a top level domain...

i mean virtual hosts stuff... do i need to buy a full domain name or does it also works with my free dns hostname by dyndns.org...

dyndns allows wildcards, so what you can do is put anything before your dyndns id, whatever it happens to be. For example, if you chose dyndns.org and enabled wildcards then you can have im.located.at.dyndns.org

you just make up whatever you want at the front of the domain name.

well ... here i am again... im not able to get it working..

my router has dns enabled with wildcard support and stays in contact with dyndns.org...

since my free dns hostname is example.kicks-ass.net i setted my linux box to this hostname... also the pc name... (dhcp & pc name)..

so my /etc/hosts was like this ->

127.0.0.1 example.kicks-ass.net localhost

192.168.0.5 test.example.kicks-ass.net

the 192. is the internal ip of my linux box recieved from the dhcp server in my router... and so i thought i give it the faked hostname....

in the network-interface options i ticked the box which says "automatically get dhcp hostname from router" (dunno if this is good or not)

so with the setup like this it doesn work... still my generic hostname is shown shown @ irc... any ideas ?!

plz help me ! im stuck !!

:thanks:

Setting up the router is one thing, I'd follow the info on the page I posted the link to, as there are specific irc programs that you need to use for changing it in there.

It's not something I've tried myself, I only found the link :P

However, with dyndns and wildcards enabled, you should be able to ping whatever.you.like.in.front.of.dyndns.org and it will reply.

Getting irc configured is something else completely separate!
