Guest dl33
Hi there, I am running Mandrake 10.1 with a Gnome Desktop on a Pentium 2. (No clue whether that is important) How do I install and set up Samba so that different people can log into the server with a password etc to view their files. (I need different shares) This should be possible over the network as well as over the Internet with an IP. I am a total linux newbie therefore please keep it simple: not too mucht unix please, I like shiny buttons better! (Do I actually need samba for the job that I am planning? Is samba maybe already installed?) Thanks already, dl33
Smorgje
If you want to have multiple accounts with own files, I'd suggest you use FTP (FTPS preferably). FTP will be easier to communicate over the internet also.
polemicz
Welcome to the board. I'd add something to Smorgje's post: some ISP's get pretty upset if you are running an FTP server, so you ought to be careful about access to files over the net. For local access Samba works fine and there is a lot of good documentation available. You may not have installed it by default. It is easy to install (I would also install Swat which allows you to configure Samba with a browser) and there is no harm to having it set up. You can do a striaghtforward set up of Samba (as well as FTP) from MCC. But do find out what your ISP thinks about FTP servers.
ianw1974
This FAQ: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=16737 is how to setup samba networking, and might be of use for you. I used it for mine and it worked a treat.
