Problems connecting Internet Wireless [solved]

Hi,

I've recently installed Mandriva Limted Ed 2005 and can't connect to my Belkin ADSL Wireless-G router.

Using the ndiswrapper (1.3rc1), the instructions from http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawi...hp/Installation

and reading posts/threads on this and other sites I've got pretty far ... I think ... but I could do with some advice now as I'm stuck :wall:

After....

ndiswrapper -i rt2500usb.inf

I check /etc/ndiswrapper/rt2500usb/HHHH:HHHH:H.H.conf

:

:

mac_address|XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

:

(1) Should this actually have a mac address? These are literal X's and not me blanking out the symbols.

After "modprobe ndiswrapper"

then "iwconfig" I get...

Warning: Driver for device wlan0 recommend version 18 of wireless Extension,

but has been compiled with version 17, therefore some driver features may not be available...

(2) Is the above a problem? How to fix if so?

Anyway the description of iwconfig of wlan0 gives...

wlan0 <snip>ESSID "blah"

Mode: Managed

Access Point: HH:HH:HH:HH:HH:HH

amongst other stuff.

The interesting point to me is that the access point isn't the same MAC address as

mentioned in a "dmesg"...

wlan0: ndiswrapper ethernet device hh:hh:hh:hh:hh:hh using driver rt2500usb...

wlan0: no IPv6 routers present

(3) The MAC address from dmesg points to my belkin receptor USB device, but the one

describing wlan0 from "iwconfig" is different ( i.e. HH:'s != hh:'s )

Should these not be the same? i.e. I guess the question is, is the access point the Belkin Receptor usb device?

(4) The last line from dmesg...

wlan0: no IPv6 routers present

I'm guessing is a problem, yes? Linked to (3) ?

Pushing on for a bit more if I try to bring up the wireless network with...

dhclient wlan0 I get...

<snip>

sit0: unknown hardware address type 776

eth1: unknown hardware address type 24

/sbin/dhclient-script: configuration for wlan0 not found.

:

Listening on blah

Sending on blah

Sending on Socket/fallback

DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port interval 8

DHCPOFFER from x.x.x.x

DHCPREQUEST on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67

DHCPACK from x.x.x.x

/sbin/dhclient-script: configuration for wlan0 not found

dhclient.c(2050): null pointer

<snip>

Any pointers here would be great.

Cheers.

Hi,

Let me start with two things to eliminate:

1) The message about different versions of Wireless Extension: I get this with my wifi card too, but it still works. It's not the most likely cause of problems.

2) In the driver's config file, don't worry about the blank MAC Address line with teh X's. This is where you can set the MAC address if you want to. The card still has its real MAC address (should be written on the casing somewhere) so this isn't important.

The DHCP issue: I've had headaches in the past configuring dhclient. You might want to try pump instead (urpmi pump), or even try configuring a static IP address.

What output do you get from 'ifconfig wlan0'?

Yeah yeah yeah, and a little dance

I can't believe it was that simple!

Installed pump, then simply "pump -i wlan0" and we're off and running.

Thank you a million times over. I was in the bad books for the last few days since installing linux and having hee haw connection, so I'll be back in favour and can now have a great weekend.

Cheers.
