Lock-ups

I have Enemy Territory installed and it runs great...but only for twenty minutes or so then it locks the computer completely up. Nothing will unlock it except a reboot. Has anyone else had this happen in ET or any other game? Does anyone know what causes this?

 

I have OpenGL installed, working fine and running using Hardware rendering (not software Mesa) with decent frame rates.

 

I have read on other forums that sometimes people's machine will lock up with excessive logging. I don't give a rats ass about logging ANYTHING and wish I could make it so the OS didn't keep track of anything with logs. Sooner or later I will figure out how to disable SYSLOG. Does anyone think maybe this logging (of something) is causing the lockup? How could I check?

 

Anyhoo...If anyone has some input, please feel free to enlighten me.

I would venture that it is either a graphics or sound problem locking you up. If logging was your problem then your computer would most likely lock up anytime - not just when playing ET.

 

Perhaps disable the ati driver and play the game with software render just to see if it still freezes and once you've isolated the problem you can look at upgrading drivers, etc. Could also try and disable sound servers (like ALSA or OSS) and then try again. Also, if you're using KDE, make sure you disable KDE's internal sound server. It is a hellish invention that causes shite all over the place.

Okay,

I tried it without sound. Still locks up. Other things lock up too. Sometimes the computer locks up just surfing the web. It usually happens when I am using my usb optical mouse (which is always, of course). For instance, I will have only firefox running and I will move the mouse and BAM...it locks up. Can a input device lock up the computer somehow? The mouse is using a generic usb/ps2 driver. Advice?

It is possible that the mouse is locking it up. Try checking your xorg.conf / XF86Config-4 file for how your mouse device is specified and try changing it to /dev/psaux

 

Also, don't be afraid of disabling ATI - you aren't uninstalling it. All you're doing is changing the driver speicification in your xorg.conf / XF86Config-4 file to a generic ati driver, it can be changed back just as easily.

Hello all,

This is a combination/repost of several others about my lockups. I think I have it narrowed down to the graphics card and OpenGL with my ATI. My computer locks completely up after a few minutes of OpenGL rendering. I had this orginally posted in the Games section because it was only happening I thought while trying to play Enemy Territory. However, I have since found out that the lockup happens even when I run fgl_glxgears. Here is what I have tried so far:

 

With flgrxconfig I have selected Yes to "use dga", No and Yes to "use external agp" and No and Yes to "sync frame buffer to refresh", No and Yes to "locked user pages". The only thing that appeared to make a difference was the "sync to refresh". Of course that reduced all frame rates to 60 instead of the 400-500 I was getting. This only prolonged the time it took to lock up. I have disabled all sound drivers / daemons / etc so it is not a sound issue I don't think.

 

What can I do to stop these lockups? Has anyone experienced similar? What else can I attempt to do to troubleshoot and isolate the issue?

Well I'm trying something out. This P4 in the laptop seemed to be getting awful hot, and I remembered that lock ups with Windoze could be attributed to excessive heat. So I opened this baby up and checked it out. There was thermal paste AND a thermal pad on the heatsink!!!!! Can you believe it? So I removed them both and cleaned it up and put on some Artic Silver. Well, there is less heat coming out of the heatsink vent so we will see. I am going to fire up ET or Neverwinter Nights and see if it locks up. All of the lock ups happened with the fan blowing full blast (thus my heat theory).

I got farther into the game. It at least loaded and the adventure began. Something else is going on. I'm going to try and post my glxinfo and fglrxinfo output. Maybe some of you smart people can spot something I'm missing. I had sound disabled (or so I thougt) and still Neverwinter Nights had sound.??? I guess I did it wrong. How do you totally disable sound with Gnome?

Are you running in Hyper Thread mode? On my desktop if I run in HT mode with the ATI driver, I have similar issues as you. Totally random lockups. However if I disable HT in the BIOS things are fine. The system works fine in HT mode using the X.org driver and it works fine in HT mode using the "other" OS. :)

Yes, I am running in HT mode. Can I disable it in BIOS without messing anything up? I know that with Windoze there is a possiblity of having to re-install if you disable HT after installing with it running (at least that is what I read once...never tried it).

 

Also, after some research I think it could be fast writes. How can one disable fast writes with Linux? I have no option in the BIOS.

I dual boot into Mandriva LE2005 & XP/sp2. I have switched the HT on and off many times while t/shooting my ATI/Linux issue and niether OS suffered. Depending on your BIOS, yes you should be able to disable it there. I can't comment about the Fast writes, I have no clue. Sorry.

 

Right now my machine is very stable in both OSes with HT turned off.
