Guest RLBourgeois
I am new to Linux and installed Mandrake 10.1 yesterday. Everything went smooth as could be...except for sound. When I finished the install, it said to use ALSAconfig or sndconfig to configure my soundcard. I spent some time looking, but can't find them. Also, I was told to run a program to populate my find database in root. Whatis it talking about "in root?" Is this a login issue? How do I complete both of these actions...I want to start exploring Linux but want to fix these first. Your welcome to email me if you have the solution. Thanks!!! Ixthusdan
root Linux and other secure operating systems have a user known as "root" that is the computer master. root can install and make system changes. In this way, stuff can't happen to your computer like in windows because root must grant permission for most activities, including those that can damage your system. You should set up your computer with a daily user and switch to root when you need to make changes. Most hardware configuration programs can be started via the gui in the Mandriva Control Center, or Configure My Computer.
