Newbie needs suggestion for software

You really don't need anti-virus with Linux but if you really want it Clamav is a good one, you might need Klamav instead though since that has a GUI.

For a firewall I like Firestarter or Guarddog equally.

For cd/dvd burning K3b wins hands down.

If you haven't already you should use Easy-Urpmi http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php and set up your sources to make downloading software easy and painless.

If anything I just said is confusing or you have further questions I'd be happy to help. It's hard to know initially how much knowledge a person has.

Hi Heather,

Thanks for your reply. I'm pretty new to Linux. I just installed it this week. I clicked on that link you sent but I don't understand what I should do on that page. Like, how do I find out my architecture and where is this console where I suppose to type stuff?

Your architecture is most likely "i586" which most of us run and means your running on a Intel 686 machine. To be sure... let us know what processor you have in your computer.

console is also known as a terminal window. If your running KDE... goto System --> Terminals --> Konsole and start that up. Before you type in those commands you will want to "SU" and become root user. You do this in that console by typing "su" and pressing enter. Then enter your password and press enter again.

I'm rather unable to answer your question because I don't have a CD/DVD burner, nor do I have a firewall or antivirus or see a need for it. However, I want to give you a little advice. As long as you don't run your browser or other net applications as root too much, I don't think you'll ever be hacked, so you may not need a firewall. Antivirus, well, it is an unheard of occurrence that Linux will get a virus. I'm not saying it's impossible, it just doesn't really happen.

You don't have to be so vigilant online with Linux, and that's what makes it a breath of fresh air compared to windows  .

Welcome to the board, smileychgo, and I hope your Linux experience turns out well.

I use the Mandriva integrated firewall (Shorewall) and I like it (MCC -> Security -> Firewall).

It has a very simple GUI, but enough functionality for my needs, i.e., closing everything, but some particular ports I specify.

OK, I found some tutorials for urpmi/installing software. 1 or more is a couple years old but still really usefull

this first one may be all you need since it's incredibly well done from what I saw and recent

Also it would benefit you greatly to read the FAQs available on this board. They are probably what helped me the most when I was learning.
