mdk-frodo
I finally got mandrake LE 2005 dvd with a linux magazine. But during my fight against Gnome's GUI pppd I found that there no mandrake documentation at the dvd or at /usr/share/doc/ there is some but not under mandrake dir and I feel that there is not enoought docs with the DVD may be is just me I think everything is online at mandrake but why ? Anyway ... How do you update linux apps for example firefox? If I have new version of it a my dvd in a folder of my magazine I just extract and install it without removing previous version? This question goes for not just this program but for all programs in genreal. I know that there is a GUI updater also I find my instalation of linux very easy to rrun and use with gnome is cool. oh and about programs I whould like to use an alternative to gaim i don't like it much so what minimal msn, icq u recomend? ... mmm i can't remember what else I need to ask
Guest vulcan bomber
I got this version via a mag as well, found there is lot's missing and it requires a lot of effort to get more than the basic working. You need to download lot's of updates, I given up and am downloading the offical 10.
scoopy
The best way to update is to use URPMI -- via the "Install Software" in the menu. Just be sure your sources are configured for main, updates, and contrib. This should take care of any dependancy issues you may face and is easily accomplished through the help of Easy Urpmi The GUI installer will decide whether you are installing something new or upgrading something already installed (this would be the diff between command rpm -i and rpm -U). Sometimes - for some reason - you will find you need to use an alternative method of installing. Such as with firefox. Although I stay away from installing anything from source (packaged as "tarballs") I find the firefox install works great this way and firefox runs faster than using the mozilla-firefox rpm that is released for Mandrake. tar -xzvf firefox-1.0.4.installer.tar.gz cd firefox-installer ./firefox-installer
ianw1974
You can use kopete instead of gaim if you like.
